Wooster set for NCAC Championships Feb. 12-15

The NCAC Championships start Wednesday at Denison University.

This Week's Outlook: The College of Wooster men's and women's swimming and diving teams travel to Denison University for the four-day 2020 North Coast Athletic Conference Championships starting 6:30 p.m. Wednesday. For each day Thursday through Saturday, prelims begin at 9:30 a.m. with finals slated for 6 p.m.

Wooster's Last Outing: The teams traveled to Baldwin Wallace University and captured wins to conclude their dual meet season. The women won 182-105, and the men took a 153-142 win. Juniors Josh Gluck and Madison Whitman broke Baldwin Wallace Natatorium records. Gluck broke a 2004 200 backstroke record with a time of 1:58.52, and Whitman swam a 2:28.76 to top the 2006 200 breaststroke time.

2017-18 NCACs: On the men's side, Denison won its 11th straight men's title with 1,851 points. Wooster finished fifth with a program-record 1,013 points, surpassing 1,000 points at the meet for the first time in program history.

For the women, Kenyon College edged Denison with 1,882 points. Wooster finished fourth with 1,153 points.

The men had All-NCAC showings in the 400 and 800 free relays, while the women took All-NCAC showings in the 200 and 400 medley relays.

Cameron Gelwicks, who ended up being a national qualifier in the 50, 100 and 200 freestyle races, was a part of both relay teams, as was Ryan CampbellTrey Schopen and Wyatt Foss are the returning All-NCAC members.

The women return Molly Likins, who competed in both the 200 and 400 relays, along with Brooke Brown(200), Hannah Langer (200) and Kate Murphy (400).

Sprint Free: Foss's best time in the 50 free this year is 22.15 as he will lead the Scots in the race. He leads the team with the top time in the 100 free at 48.06 and the 200 free at 1:46.33. 

Likins moved into the record book in the 50 free this year when she swam a 24.34 at the Wooster Invitational. Brown follows her this year with the next best time of 24.77. In the 100 free, Lexi Riley-DiPaolo leads the pack with a best time of 54.72 this year with Avery Pearson behind at 55.12. Riley-DiPaolo also has the time to beat in the 200 free at 1:58.14.

Distance Free: In the distance races, Eli Samuelson leads the way in the 500 free after swimming a 5:13.88 in his last race. 

For the women, Nell Kacmarek takes the team's top time into the 500 free (5:19.35) and 1650 free (18:02.13). She enters ninth in the 1650, and Kay Wetmore follows in 11th (18:09.55).

IM: Gluck will look to claim a record in the 200 individual medley race, as he enters leading the team in the race (1:53.87), which places him 11th on the psych sheet. In the shorter 100 IM race, Wylie Greeson (55.13) enters the meet third, while Sam Muse enters at sixth (56.81). and Noah Golovan (56.44) lead the Scots.

Whitman will aim for records as well in the IM races. She leads the team in the 200 (2:15.38) and 400 (4:44.89). Langer is a few ticks off (2:15.65) in the 200 IM. Brown has the best time in the 100 IM at 1:01.48, as her and Riley-DiPaolo will enter the event fifth and sixth, respectively.

Butterfly: Schopen enters his specialized races with the top times in the 100 and 200 butterfly this year. At the Wooster Invite, he swam a 50.47 in the 100 and a 1:52.45 in the 200. He holds the school record in the 100 fly (49.02) and 200 fly (1:51.78).

Anne Bowers leads the women with a time of 59.58 in the 100 and a time of 2:12.95 in the 200. On the psych sheet, she enters in the top 15 of both events.

Backstroke: Gluck and Schopen have the two top times in the 100 back at 51.28 and 52.33, respectively. Gluck also leads the way in the 200 back at 1:52.07.

Murphy got under a minute in the 100 back at 59.91 at the Wooster Invitational to enter with Wooster's top time in the event and 13th overall. In the 200, Langer edged out Murphy with the top time. She swam a 2:11.22 at the Wooster Invite to Murphy's 2:11.98. Mia Chen is not too far behind at 2:12.68, and all three will compete in the race.

Breaststroke: Craig Klumpp leads the men in the breaststroke with a time of 1:00.17 in the 100 and a time of 2:08.96 in the 200 breast. His time in the 200 placed him second in the school record books. In 2018, he swam a 59.69 in the 100, which is the sixth best time at Wooster.

Likins will be one to watch in the 100 and 200 breaststroke races. She lowered her school record in the 100 and broke the record in the 200 at the Wooster Invitational. She also captured NCAA Division III "B" cut times in both races – 1:04 in the 100 and 2:21.27 in the 200. Whitman will look to follow as she is currently fifth in the school records in both races.

Relays: Both the men and women will look for similar success in the relays as they had in 2019.
After the men had All-NCAC outings in the 400 and 800 free, they will take a season-best time of 3:10.60 in the 400 and a 7:09.88 in the 800. However, they will have their work cut out for them, listed eighth in the psych sheet in the 800 and 10th in the 400.

The women return a number from their All-NCAC 200 and 400 medley relay teams. They enter fifth with a best 200 time this year at 1:48.25, and sixth in the 400 with a best time of 3:57.40.

Diving: The men will turn to sophomore Eric Jacques and first-year Nicholas Rabaut in the diving portions of the meet. At last year's meet, Jacques was fifth in both the 1 meter (360.20) and the 3 meter (335.30). Rabaut scored a second place finish in the 1 meter (137) in the team's final meet against Baldwin Wallace this year.

The women will take a first year of their own in Lucie Redmann, who, in her last meet, won at Baldwin Wallace with a score of 177.40 in the 3 meter and a 142.53 in the 1 meter. Redmann sits ninth in the school record book in the 1 meter after scoring a 312.65 during the Wooster Invitational back in December.
