Bream, Pearson Sweep 400 IM Titles Again at Wooster Invite

Wooster Swimming WOOSTER, Ohio – For the third year in a row, The College of Wooster's Ollie Bream and Josh Pearson swept the 400 individual medley titles at the program's annual Wooster Invitational, which continued on Friday at Ellen Shapiro Natatorium. Bream, a junior, scored first-place finish number seven over her career at the meet, while Pearson's marked the senior's fifth.

Pearson's winning time of 4:04.43 was over nine seconds better than his prelim swim of 4:13.66. Bream's 4:33.40 ranked about two seconds ahead of University of Cumberlands' Alicja Sedlak, who was the runner up.

Bream's top billing was one of four top-three Friday finishes for the Fighting Scots' women. Senior Maddie Becker's 1:06.72 was the runner-up time in the 100 breaststroke, while both of the Scots' top relays were third-place finishers. In the 200 medley relay, Becker, junior Izzy Bellefleur, Bream, and junior Hallie Findlan went 1:46.51, while Bream, sophomore Emma Humbert, junior JP Timken, and senior Emma Connors capped the session with an 8:02.17 in the 800 freestyle relay.

Other individual championship final placers were first-year Charlotte Helm (sixth, 100 backstroke, 1:01.16), Bellefleur (seventh, 100 breaststroke, 1:08.81), Connors (seventh, 200 freestyle, 2:00.48), and first-year Becca Murray (eighth, 100 butterfly, 1:01.91). In the diving well, junior Cady Eakins scored 227.30 points for a sixth-place finish on the one-meter board, while first-year Grace Laymon was ninth with 150.85 points.

First-year Tara McGovern, junior Vicky Maumbe, Murray, and Helm rounded out the top-eight placers on the night with a 1:54.70 in the 200 medley relay. Findlan and Humbert won consolation finals with times of 1:02.11 and 4:45.58 in the 100 backstroke and 400 individual medley, respectively, while McGovern's 1:03.18 was right behind Findlan in the backstroke. First-year Kate Peck, sophomore Lacey Mindock, first-year Anna Lundquist, and sophomore Bailey Nickols went 8:28.81 to claim a ninth-place finish in the 800 freestyle.

On the men's side, Wooster's strength is the 400 individual medley, where three current Scots hold top-10 times in program history. While they did not hit collegiate-bests on Friday evening, all three were in the championship final. Junior Tucker Andrewjeski's 4:09.78 was the fourth-place time, while junior Isaac Shaker supported Pearson and Andrewjeski with the sixth-place time of 4:11.95.

Sophomore Blu Catanzaro led the way on the three-meter diving board with the runner-up score of 325.10 points. Big points were scored there by the Scots, with sophomore Leo Edmonds-Doberenz (281.25 points) and classmate Noah McDonald (236.60 points) scoring sixth- and ninth-place finishes, respectively.

Pearson, junior Ryan Gross, sophomore Boston Sullivan, and sophomore Callum Glover teamed up for a fourth-place time of 7:01.14 in the 800 freestyle relay, while first-year Ethan Neuner, sophomore Will Laubacher, sophomore Flynn Cowie, and Shaker stopped the watch at 7:14.64, which was good for seventh. Seventh is where sophomore Will Laymon, Sullivan, Pearson, and Neuner wound up in the 200 medley relay after a time of 1:35.70.

Sullivan's 58.18 in the 100 breaststroke was the seventh-place time. He was just shy of a lifetime best of 58.12, which rates as the third-fastest time in program history. Glover did score a top-10 program time with the 1:44.18 from prelims in the 200 freestyle ranking eighth. Glover finished eighth in finals at 1:44.26. Junior Max Likins was the top performer in the 100 backstroke (12th, 53.95) and the 100 butterfly (18th, 53.88).

Wooster's women are comfortably in second-place at 961 points. The men are fighting the University of Mount Union for third-place. The Purple Raiders carry a 797.5-787 lead over the Scots into the final day of competition. University of Cumberlands, a NAIA program, is leading the way with 1,499.5 men's points and 1,270 points on the women's side.
