Wooster Women Down Mount Union in Saturday Action
Fighting Scots compete against Mount Union and Oberlin
OBERLIN, Ohio – The College of Wooster's women downed University of Mount Union 173-115 to headline Saturday's swimming and diving tri-meet at Oberlin College. Host Oberlin edged out Wooster's women 149-148. On the men's side, Mount Union beat Wooster 150-138 and Oberlin won 199-97.
Saturday's standings between Oberlin and Wooster came down to the meet-capping 200 freestyle relay. There, the Yeowomen placed first and third, while Wooster's top quartet of senior JP Timken, sophomore Kate Peck, sophomore Charlotte Helm, and junior Patricia Chen were fourth with a time of 1:46.10.
Wooster's 200 individual medley swimmers did their part to give the Fighting Scots a chance. Senior Ollie Bream scored her third individual win of the meet with the winning time of 2:15.19. That was backed up by first-year Elizabeth Theobald's runner-up 2:20.76. Junior Emma Humbert swam a 2:22.07 for fourth-place in the event.
Bream's other event titles started in the 200 butterfly, where her 2:09.79 was the winning time by nearly 12 seconds. Later, Bream went 58.61 to touch first in the 100 butterfly. Theobald provided strong support in Bream's events, adding a runner-up 2:21.21 in the 200 butterfly to the second-place showing in the 200 individual medley.
Elsewhere, Wooster posted a one-two finish in the 200 backstroke. Helm claimed first with a time of 2:17.60, and right behind was Humbert, who touched at 2:18.03. Timken's 11:06.32 earned the blue ribbon in the 1,000 freestyle, as did first-year Maggie Layne's 2:36.71 in the 200 breaststroke.
Junior Blu Catanzaro was the lone winner on the men's side. Catanzaro scored 174.30 points to win the one-meter diving competition, and the 176.70 points scored on the three-meter board went down as the runner-up score.
Junior Will Laymon, junior Boston Sullivan, first-year Marek Kaszynski, and senior Callum Glover started the meet with the runner-up time of 1:37.24 in the 200 medley relay. Shaker and Glover both scored individual runner-up finishes, with those coming in the 200 butterfly (1:56.20) and 50 freestyle (21.80), respectively. Senior Tucker Andrewjeski went 2:11.11 for the runner-up time in the 200 breaststroke.
Next, Wooster hosts Grove City College at 1 p.m. on Saturday, November 16 at Timken Natatorium.
