Women Fourth, Men Fifth to Conclude NCAC Championships
Bream achieves B cut while Andrewjeski ups school record
As the North Coast Athletic Conference Swimming & Diving Championships came to an end Saturday night, The College of Wooster men's and women's teams stayed the course, stabilizing in their positions they finished at on Friday.
The women placed fourth of eight teams with 1,159 points, while the men finished fifth of nine at 1,016 points
The overall victors went to Kenyon College on the women's side (2,040 points) and Denison University on the men's side (2,061.5).
Meanwhile, Wooster capped the event with a NCAA "B" cut on the women's side and an upping of a school record on the men's side.
Senior Ollie Bream earned the "B" cut in the morning prelims of the 200 fly where she swam to a time of 2:04.51. The "B" cut time is set at 2:05.01, but last year's invited time to the NCAA DIII Championships was set a bit lower at 2:04.49.
In the finals, Bream placed fourth in the event (2:06.44).
The record breaker of the day belonged to Tucker Andrewjeski on the men's side. The senior lowered his school record in the 200 breast from 2:05.43 to 2:05.37 and finished eighth in the event.
Staying with the men, Philipp Drappatz (16:43.07) and Will Laubacher (16:45.48) finished in ninth and tenth, respectively, in the 1650 free. In fact, Drappatz's time moved him ahead of Laubacher for seventh on the program's top-10 list.
In the 200 fly, Isaac Shaker lowered his personal best by .05 to take fifth in 1:53.42. Matt Kaley and Drappatz finished in 16th and 17th, respectively.
In the 400 free relay, Wooster placed sixth with a time of 3:11.36 behind the team of Callum Glover, Laubacher, Boston Sullivan and Ryan Gross.
Sophomore Noah McDonald placed sixth in the 3-meter diving portion of the evening, scoring 289.15 points.
In the 200 back, Will Laymon qualified for top nine and finished in ninth at 1:57.02. Max Likins finished 12th (1:57.58), and Aiden Lentz came in 16th (2:01.30).
In the 100 free, Glover swam a 46.95 to place 11th, and Gross swam 47.87 to place 17th.
In the 200 breast consolation, Wooster had three more placements in Sullivan (11th), Ryan Stokes (13th) and Nathan Ferrence (18th).
Parker Robinson claimed the last spot in the consolation finals in the 100 IM. He swam a 56.56 for 18th.
For the women, in the 100 IM, five qualified for the two final heats with Elizabeth Theobald leading the pack. In the finals, she improved to sixth and dropped her time to 1:00.45 for a top three time in school history.
Izzy Bellefleur (1:03.33) came in 11th, while Keara Wiley (1:03.82), Anna Lundquist (1:06.39) and Vicky Maumbe (1:07.77) claimed the 13-15 placements. Bellefleur improved her time just enough to move up one spot to ninth on the school's top 10 list.
Later, Bellefleur placed seventh in the 200 breast at 2:27.31. Meanwhile, Maggie Layne finished 10th (2:31.63), Alex Hein finished 12th (2:41.76) and Maumbe finished 14th (2:43.37) in the consolations.
Following Bream in the 200 fly, JP Timken placed eighth (2:17.40). Further down, Becca Murray placed 14th (2:30.01).
In the 200 back finals, Charlotte Helm placed ninth in the main heat at 2:13.35. Emma Humbert finished atop the consolation heat, finishing 10th at 2:13.82. Mariam Zayour swam to 12th at 2:16.73.
In the 100 free, Hallie Findlan swam an even 53 seconds to place 11th.
In the 1650, Timken came in seventh at 17:52.96. Rachel Frank finished 12th in 18:38, and Bailey Nickols was 14th in 19:14.90.
Finally, Wooster finished fifth in the 400 free relay in 3:37.12 behind Findlan, Timken, Wiley and Bream.
There is one more meet for the Scots before the NCAA Division III Championships take place. Wooster will travel to Kenyon College for its Fast Chance Invitational on Feb. 22.
