Eric Dyer won the triple jump and Katie Dale set a school record
at the All-Ohio Championships, highlighting The College of Wooster
track & field team’s weekend, which included two meets.
While the Fighting Scots did help Oberlin College inaugurate its
Robert Kahn Track with a non-scoring dual late Friday evening, the
primary focus was on Saturday’s All-Ohio meet, hosted by Ohio
Wesleyan University.
Dyer’s victory was a dramatic one, earning the title on his
last jump when he hit a mark of 45 feet, 2.5 inches to outdistance
runner-up David Burke of Ohio Wesleyan University by 3.5 inches (44
feet, 11 inches). It was a personal-best for the Wooster sophomore
who continues his breakout season.
“It was an outstanding effort on (Eric’s) part,”
said veteran Scot head coach Dennis Rice. “With his last
attempt … he came through with a championship
effort.”
Also for Wooster in the triple jump, senior Tristan Jordan came in
fourth (43 feet, 11.25 inches).
The Scots had multiple scorers in the 10,000 meters as well, paced
by junior Mark DeWine’s fourth-place run. A time of 32:58.19
put him less than seven seconds behind the runner-up, while
sophomore Terry Workman added an eighth-place showing in the long
distance race, crossing the finish line in 33:09.54.
Jordan finished just outside of the scoring in the long jump via a
ninth-place mark of 20 feet, 2.25 inches, as did junior Averell
Gatton and sophomore Jon Mathis, who tied for ninth overall in the
high jump (5 feet, 10 inches), and sophomore Ramses Clements, who
was ninth in the triple jump (40 feet, 9 inches).
Dale re-set her own record in the hammer throw with a heave of 108
feet, 9 inches Saturday, while fellow junior Kayla Miller led
Wooster’s women’s team via a third-place finish in the
triple jump, reaching 35 feet, 3.25 inches, which was less than
five inches shy of the champion’s mark (35 feet, 7.75
inches).
Sophomore KateLynn Riley had the third-fastest time of the
preliminaries in the 100-meter hurdles at 16.01 and lowered that to
15.89 during the finals, but slipped to sixth-place. Also on the
track, freshman Suzanne Capehart covered the 5000 meters in
18:38.82, good for fourth.
Additional noteworthy performances included Miller tying for ninth
in the high jump (4 feet, 9 inches) and Dale posting a 10th-place
effort in the shot put (35 feet, 5.75 inches).
