The College of Wooster men’s and women’s track & field teams were part of a large group of schools, spanning all three NCAA divisions as well as NAIA institutions, at the Coastal Carolina Invitational this Friday and Saturday in Myrtle Beach, S.C. The meet was a non-scoring team event, as individuals were looking to establish strong times/marks during the outdoor season opener for most.

Wooster was led by a couple of third-place finishes on the men’s side, as juniors Eric Dyer and Robert McConnell earned that standing in their specialties – Dyer in the triple jump (44 feet, 7 inches) and McConnell in the pole vault (13 feet, 1.5 inches). Also in the triple jump, Averell Gatton hit 10th overall (41 feet, 2.5 inches), while in the long jump, Gatton was 14th (19 feet, 11.5 inches), and Dyer 16th (19 feet, 9 inches).

On the track, the Fighting Scots had some solid distance runs. Mark DeWine and Bryan Loy placed ninth (33:43.77) and 10th (34:14.06), respectively, in the 10,000 meters, and Terry Workman crossed 16th out of 41 in the 3000 meters (9:06.87).

In women’s action, Wooster’s highest showing came from the 4x400-meter relay team, consisting of Kayla Miller, Chelsea Fisher, Whitney Rappole, and Jean Quenneville, as the group came in ninth overall (4:29.58).

Individually, javelin specialist Katharina Kroll led the way with a 12th-place performance (111 feet, 8 inches), while teammate KateLynn Riley was not far behind in 15th (103 feet, 1 inch). Riley made a significant impact in the hurdles, finishing 16th in the 400 (1:11.36) and 18th in the 100 (15.98). Also of note, Miller notched 14th in the triple jump (34 feet, 0.75 inches) and Suzanne Capehart produced a 16th-place run in the 3000 meters (11:17.03).

The Scots will be at the Roanoke Invitational next Saturday.
