Wooster Nabs 12 First-Place Finishes at Denison Invitational

The College of Wooster's men's and women's track and field teams cleaned house at the Denison Invitational, as they combined for 12 first-place finishes at Friday's meet, which included the North Coast Athletic Conference's Kenyon College, Ohio Wesleyan University, Wittenberg University, and host Denison University.

The women built off last weekend's solid performance with an even better one, as they won seven events at the Denison Invitational, and also earned another seven second-place finishes. Highlighting their efforts was Abena Boamah-Acheampong, who broke her own school record in the high jump by clearing the bar at 5 feet, 5.25 inches. Boamah-Acheampong was also dominant in the triple jump, which she won with 34 feet, 3 inches.

Also winning two events was throwing specialist Somadina Iworisha, who took top honors in the discus (104 feet, 9 inches) and javelin throw (99 feet, 1 inch).

Others turning in first-place efforts were Meredith Shaul in the 3000 meters (10:30.22), Whitney Rappole in the 400 meter hurdles (1:08.65), and Miriam Wise in the long jump (15 feet, 11 inches). Stephanie McShane came close to notching a victory in the sprints, as she crossed second in the 100 meter dash (12.87) and third in the 200 meter dash (26.43).

The men were led by Ethan Deselem and his first-place showings in the 100 meter dash (11.22) and 200 meter dash (22.80). Three others won their respective events as well, including Quinton Howard in the high jump (5 feet, 9.75 inches), Sean Twining in the triple jump (37 feet, 5.25 inches), and thrower Josh Kime in the shot put (44 feet, 10.75 inches).

Micah Caunter and Kevin DeGroot both earned second-place in the 800 meters (1:58.66) and 1500 meters (4:10.36), respectively.

The Scots will take their positive momentum into the NCAC Championships which kickoff on May 6 at Oberlin, Ohio.
