Abena Boamah-Acheampong became an All-American at the NCAA Div. III Championships on Saturday, as The College of Wooster sophomore standout tied for eighth-place against the top high jumpers in the nation during the prestigious outdoor meet that was held at Ohio Wesleyan University in Delaware, Ohio.

Competing against 21 others in the event, Boamah-Acheampong matched her career-high by clearing the 5 feet, 5.75 inch mark on her third attempt at that height, which tied her with another jumper for eighth-place. Although it took her more attempts, she actually cleared the same height as the next four jumpers that finished ahead of her.

"Abena has had an outstanding year, and today was just an excellent way to wrap up the season," said Wooster head coach Dennis Rice. "One thing about Abena is that she is very confident in her abilities and she doesn't get flustered, and that showed today."

Boamah-Acheampong is now the first Wooster track and field All-American since distance runner Katie Wieferich in 2007.

"Abena is representing our program in such a positive way," added Rice. "And seeing how well she did today, I feel strongly that she is on the right path to not only return here (nationals), but to finish even higher."
