The College of Wooster's men's and women's track and field teams combined to win seven individual events and place highly in several others, as the Fighting Scots produced a strong showing at the Denison Big Red Invitational, a non-scoring meet Friday at Granville, Ohio.
The women picked up five of the first-place finishes, including a pair in running events, where Kelsie Herring edged out 11 others in the 400 meter dash (1:02.53), and recent North Coast Athletic Conference Distance Athlete of the Week, Meredith Shaul, won the 1500 meters in 4:52.41.
In the throwing events, Veronique Jones took top honors in the hammer throw (125 feet, 9 inches), which bested teammate Katharina Kroll's second-place effort of 117 feet even. Kroll topped the field in another event, though, as she won the javelin throw in 109 feet, 9 inches.
Finally, Abena Boamah-Acheampong continued her streak of dominance in the high jump, this time winning a jump off by clearing the bar at 5 feet, 3.75 inches.
The women garnered several other second-place finishes, including Kara Johnson in the 100 meter dash (13.30), Stephanie McShane in the 200 meter dash (26.92), Lauren Buyan in the 400 meter dash (1:02.76), Ellen Sandin in the long jump (16 feet, 8.5 inches), Devin Johns in the javelin throw (98 feet, 11 inches), and another for Kroll, who was runner-up in the shot put with a throw of 32 feet, 8.25 inches.
On the men's side, Gabriel Abud and Mason Mendenhall triumphed individually, as Abud narrowly ousted his teammate Casey Green in the 1500 meters (4:15.29), and Mendenhall won the javelin throw in 129 feet, 5 inches.
Also noteworthy, Micah Caunter crossed the finish line second among a field of 20 in the 3000 meters (9:03.75), while Ethan Deselem picked up second and third-place accolades in the 200 meter dash (23.02) and 100 meter dash (11.51), respectively.
