Abena Boamah- Acheampong

Abena Boamah-Acheampong and Ellen Sandin won individual championships, and four other members of The College of Wooster's women's track and field team added top-three performances as well, leading the Fighting Scots to a fourth-place finish this weekend at the North Coast Athletic Conference Championships in Meadville, Pa. The men's team placed ninth.

The women scored 90 points, which was just enough to get by host Allegheny College (88.50) and secure fourth-place for the second year in a row. Ohio Wesleyan University ran away with the team title (220.50), while Oberlin College (159) and DePauw University (132) rounded out the top-three.

Boamah-Acheampong won the high jump in the same manner she did at last year's outdoor championships, by besting Ohio Wesleyan's Emily Amburgey in a jump-off. This time she cleared the bar at 5 feet, 3 inches, which topped 14 others, including classmate Kendra Shehy, who garnered her first-ever all-conference certificate with a third-place jump of 4 feet, 11.75 inches.

Ironically, Sandin also was involved in a jump-off with Amburgey in her signature event (long jump), and like Boamah-Acheampong, she came out on top with her effort of 17 feet, 2.25 inches.

The Scots had a pair of seniors just miss individual championships, as Meredith Shaul placed second in the 10,000 meters in 38:26.62, and Katharina Kroll was runner-up in the javelin throw in 116 feet, 8 inches.

Also picking up all-conference honors was Erin Plews-Ogan, with a third-place in the 3,000 meter steeplechase (11:48.01). Joining Plews-Ogan as scorers in the event were Lauren Buyan (12:02.52) and Sarah Appleton (12:22.21), who crossed the finish line in fifth and eighth, respectively.

Rounding out the women's other scoring efforts, Shaul was fourth in 5,000 meter run (18:20.62), Kelsie Herring took fourth in the 800 meters (2:18.81), Boamah-Acheampong placed fourth in the triple jump (33 feet, 8.5 inches), Jensen Buchanan was fifth in the 400 meter hurdles (1:08.68) and seventh in the heptathlon, Shehy earned sixth-place in the 400 meter hurdles (1:09.44), Veronique Jones earned sixth in the shot put (35 feet, 9.5 inches), and Amy French had the eight-best performance in the triple jump (32 feet, 2.25 inches).

The men's team scored 16 points, which was seven shy of Kenyon College (23). Wabash College dominated this year's outdoor meet with 314.50 points, while Ohio Wesleyan (157.50) and Oberlin College (71) finished second and third, respectively.

Wooster's best finish came in the 4x400 meter relay, where John Lanz, Ryan Kish, Stephen Ferguson, and David Brew crossed fifth in 3:26.96. In other relay action, the team of Robert Flagg, Lanz, Remington Jackson, and Ethan Deselem took sixth-place in the 4x100 meters (43.72).

Individually, Brew contributed a sixth-place in the javelin throw (136 feet, 9 inches) and in last week's decathlon, while Micah Caunter nabbed seventh in the 800 meters (1:57.38), and Jay Marshall also placed seventh in the pole vault (13 feet, 3.75 inches).

Sophomore Luke Hutchings-Goetz just fell shy of scoring in two events, earning 10th in both the 5,000 (15:49.24) and 10,000 meters (33:14.88).
