Two More School Records Fall at Fighting Scots Invitational

Wooster's Savannah Moore was impressive in her debut with the track and field team Saturday,
as she placed second in the shot put (pictured), and set a school record in the weight throw.

Savannah Moore (weight throw) and Paris Nahas (200 meters) were the latest College of Wooster track and field athletes to break school records, as the duo propelled the women's team to a second-place finish at the Fighting Scots Invitational, while the men took third on Saturday afternoon inside the Scot Center.

Competing at home for the third straight week, and last time this indoor season, the Scots welcomed North Coast Athletic Conference schools Denison University, Kenyon College, Oberlin College, and Wittenberg University for a five-team meet. Wooster's women totaled 131 points, just eight points back from first-place Oberlin (139), and the men scored 89 points, behind both Oberlin (97) and Wittenberg (138).

Although seeing school records fall has become the norm for the Scots this season, with four such efforts over the last three weeks, today's record-breaking performances were both quite exceptional.

Moore, a transfer and also a member of Wooster's volleyball team, was making her debut with track and field, and she made it a memorable one by shattering the program record in the weight throw. Her toss traveled 42 feet, 10.75 inches, good for third-place, and was more than five feet further than the previous record of 37 feet, 9.5 inches, set by Veronique Jones in 2011.

Moore added a second-place showing in the shot put with 37 feet, 8.50 inches – only a few feet off another school record – giving the Scots an impressive presence in the throwing events.

Nahas, who set the school record in the 60 meters at 8.13 earlier this month, was a winner in that same event today in nearly the exact same time (8.14). More impressively, she broke a 15-year-old record in the 200 meters, as she crossed the finish line second in a field of 16 with a time of 26.89, besting Mia Rapier's long-standing record of 27.03.

The women's team had three others join Nahas with first-place finishes, including multi-event standout Hilary Coady, who won the 60-meter hurdles in 9.53, and was second of 14 in the long jump with 16 feet, 1.5 inches. Kendra Shehy had the winning high jump, as she cleared the bar at 5 feet, 2.5 inches, while Lauren Buyan bested a field of 15 in the mile (5:25.31), about seven seconds in front of her nearest challenger.

Over on the men's side, it was in throwing and distance running where the Scots stood out. First, transfer Eric Fenton won the weight throw with a heave of 45 feet, 3.75 inches, which just edged out teammate, and school record holder, Matt Margida, who was third today with 45 feet, 1.75 inches. Margida wouldn't be denied a victory, though, as he won the shot put for the third consecutive week, this time using a 45 feet, 5.0 inch-toss to get the job done.

On the track, Joe David outlasted 10 others in the 5,000 meters with a first-place time of 15:43.32, while fellow distance runner Blake Pecoraro set the winning pace in the 3,000 meters (8:58.28).

The Scots will hit the road for the first time this winter when they enter the Denison Invitational next Saturday.
