The College of Wooster track & field programs opened the 2018 North Coast Athletic Conference Indoor Championships on Friday afternoon, hosted by Wabash College in Crawfordsville, Ind., with the men finishing first-day events in 9th place with nine points and the women in 5th place with 20 points.
Oberlin College leads the women's side with 80.5 points while Ohio Wesleyan University leads the men's side with 36 points.
Senior Elizabeth Obi turned in Wooster's top individual finish of the day with a fifth-place leap in the triple jump (34 feet, 2.25 inches), followed by junior Mallory Crane, who came in eighth place at 32 feet, 10.5 inches.
Senior Mackenzie Kellar took home seventh place in the pole vault (9 feet, 11.25 inches) while sophomore Korri Palmer turned in Wooster's fastest 60-meter dash time of the year with a preliminary time of 8.34, good for eighth and the opportunity to advance to tomorrow's championship heat.
Junior Erika Womack just missed out on a championship heat appearance in the open 400 with a preliminary time of 1:03.38, which also marked the Fighting Scots' fastest time of the season.
Junior Carolyn Webster, who placed second in last weekend's NCAC Pentathlon, advanced to tomorrow's final heat in the 60-meter hurdles with an eighth-place time of 9.84.
Lastly, in the distance medley relay, the quartet of sophomore Cobi Warstler, junior Julia Higgins, junior Emani Kelley, and Kellar edged Denison University by .02 seconds for a fourth-place time of 13:12.60.
On the men's side, junior David Westcott turned in Wooster's lone top-eight individual finish of the afternoon with an eighth-place time of 15:46.78 in the 5,000 meters. Junior Jackson Feinknopf followed in 12th place (15:54.99).
The quartet of sophomore Aedan Pettit, first-year Matt Klonowski, junior Jack Petrecca, and junior Brian Lief claimed fifth in the distance medley relay (10:49.71), just .31 seconds of the sixth-place Denison squad.
Additionally, first-year Aidan Enright turned in an 11th-place time of 2:04.82 in the 800.
Wooster resumes action tomorrow with field events at 10 a.m., followed by running events at 2:15 p.m.
