Scots Finally Underway, Win 10 Events in Lid-Lifter

Athena Tharenos
Wooster first-year Athena Tharenos won the 800 meters in her collegiate debut.

The College of Wooster's indoor track and field season officially kicked off on Friday evening at Wittenberg University, as the Fighting Scots tangled with the Tigers inside the Steemer. Wittenberg swept the meet, winning 77.5-55.5 on the men's side and 76-47 on the women's side.

Wooster did turn in a number of notable performances, with the Scots winning 10 events on the night. Junior Richie Pajak headlined the Scots' blue-ribbon efforts with the top marks in the high jump (6 feet) and triple jump (37 feet, 11.5 inches). Of note, Pajak's high jump was just two inches off his collegiate best from the 2019 North Coast Athletic Conference Indoor Championships.

Sticking with the field events, first-year Dylan Garretson cleared 14 feet in the pole vault in his collegiate debut, and that mark's just a foot shy of Jeff Waugh's school record that's stood for 32 years. Junior Conor Greene won the weight throw at 38 feet, 11 inches.

On the track, junior Will McMichael took charge in the 800 meters (2:05.07), while sophomore Korey Simmons was king of the 60-meter hurdles at 9.01 seconds.

Junior Morgan Kromer and senior Georgia Hopps-Weber claimed the top two spots in the pole vault, and both cleared 10 feet on the night. Junior Claudia Partridge cleared 5 feet, 1.75 inches in the high jump and beat out four other competitors.

Junior Maya Vasta was first to the finish in the 400 meters at 1:03.77, which was just over two seconds off her collegiate-best time of 1:01.05, which came at last year's NCAC meet. First-year Athena Tharenos broke the tape in the 800 meters with a time of 2:25.72.

Next, Wooster hosts Ohio Wesleyan University on Saturday, March 6. Field events start at 11 a.m. with track events set to start at approximately 12:30 p.m. No spectators are permitted, and the meet will be livestreamed.

note: Wooster's athletic communication staff tabulated the meet scores per NCAA dual-meet point vaules off of the live results.
