The College of Wooster track and field team logged 11 first-place finishes in its final tune-up for the upcoming North Coast Athletic Conference Championships. The Fighting Scots were just edged out by host Allegheny College for the team title on the men's side, while the women also placed second at the Marty Goldberg Gator Invite on Friday afternoon.

First-year Drew Patterson and junior Maya Vasta scored triple-winner status. Patterson doubled up individually in the jumps, clearing 4 feet, 11 inches in the high jump and reaching 15 feet in the long jump. Vasta earned top billing in the 200 meters and 400-meter hurdles with times of 27.04 and 1:13.05, respectively. In the 4x100, junior Saralee Renick, Vasta, Patterson, and junior Morgan Kromer crossed with the winning time of 51.98.

A big haul of Wooster's points came in the hurdles. There, first-year Mary Sirois won the 100-meter event at 17.11, and her time of 1:16.04 backed up Vasta's 1:13.05 in the 400-meter event. In fact, Wooster had the only entries in the 400-meter hurdles, and that resulted in the Scots picking up 12 points in the scoring column.

Other runner-up women's finishes included senior Zoe Covey in the 400 meters (1:05.32), first-year Athena Tharenos in the 800 meters (2:27.34), junior Kayla Bertholf in the 3,000-meter steeplechase (12:28.48), junior Isabelle Hoover in the 5,000 meters (18:50.24), senior Georgia Hopps-Weber in the pole vault (10 feet), the 4x400 (4:39.00) relay consisting of Vasta, sophomore Haley Bloom, Covey, and Tharenos, and the 4x800 relay (10:32.26) consisting of Tharenos, Bloom, first-year Amelia Carmack, and Covey.

Junior Alexander DeLong and Nick Scherson scored two wins on the day to lead the men. DeLong's 4:07.77 in the 1,500 meters marked a new collegiate-best, while the junior duo teamed up with first-year Mitchell Ecklund and junior Will McMichael to take the 4x800 at 8:45.66. Scherson led off Wooster's first-place 4x100 relay before giving way to juniors Kristian Coleman and Troy Baughman and senior Mark Herron, who stopped the clock at 45.38.

First-year Dylan Garretson, the reigning NCAC Athlete of the Week for men's field events, made it 7-for-7 when it comes to winning the pole vault. Garretson topped out at 13 feet, 5.75 inches on Friday. Sophomore Luke Henke took the high jump at 6 feet, and the Scots scored 12 points in that event, with classmate Nate Andrews' 5 feet, 8 inches backing that up.

Other runner-up men's efforts came from junior Mateo Renteria in the 400 meters (55.52), McMichael in the 800 meters (2:02.60), sophomore Korey Simmons in the 110-meter hurdles (15.89), sophomore Joe Shilts in the 400-meter hurdles (58.02), first-year Duncan Hardy in the 3,000-meter steeplechase (10:47.61), the 4x400 relay (3:43.70) consisting of Shilts, Renteria, first-year Zachary Galdo, and Scherson, Coleman in the long jump (19 feet, 11 inches), and Galdo in the triple jump (36 feet, 4.75 inches).

Allegheny's 130 men's points held off Wooster, which finished at 123. Denison University rounded out the field with 95 points.

On the women's side, Allegheny won comfortably with 131 points, while Wooster (105) held off Denison (103).

Next, Wooster's at the NCAC Championships. Ohio Wesleyan University is hosting the men's meet on May 6 and Denison is hosting the women's meet on May 9. No spectators are permitted at either championship, per NCAC policies.
