Garretson Captures NCAC Pole Vault Title; Three Scots Earn All-Conference Honors at Men's NCAC Championships

Dylan Garretson
Dylan Garretson is the fourth Scot to win the NCAC outdoor pole vault title.

First-year Dylan Garretson won the pole vault, and The College of Wooster men's track & field team had a pair of all-conference high jumpers at the North Coast Athletic Conference Championships, which were held on Thursday afternoon at Ohio Wesleyan University. The Fighting Scots placed seventh.

Garretson cleared 14 feet, 11 inches on his first try, and Ohio Wesleyan's Joey Verdugo couldn't keep pace with the Fighting Scots' rookie sensation, who is still undefeated in the event. Garretson is Wooster's fourth NCAC champion in the outdoor pole vault, joining the ranks of Jeff Pattison (1996), Tim Sir Louis (1997), and Doug Reiser (2003).

In the high jump, sophomore Nate Andrews upped his collegiate-best to 6 feet, 1.5 inches en route to earning all-conference honors for the first time. Andrews was the runner-up. Junior Richie Pajak backed that up with the third-place mark of 5 feet, 11.50 inches, and in doing so, he collected all-conference laurels for the first time.

Two Scots just missed on all-conference laurels with fourth-place finishes in the middle-distance events. In the 1,500 meters, junior Alexander DeLong shaved nearly six seconds off his collegiate-best, crossing at 4:01.99. In the 800 meters, classmate Will McMichael stopped the watch at 1:57.24, and that wasn't far off his collegiate-best time of 1:57.15. McMichael's time on Thursday was 47 hundredths of a second shy of an all-conference position.

Staying on the track, junior Nick Scherson's 50.48 was the fifth-place time in the 400 meters, and he was 40 hundredths of a second back of the final all-conference time, while also posting a new collegiate-best. Elsewhere, sophomore Joe Shilts' 58.17 was the seventh-place time in the 400-meter hurdles, while classmate Korey Simmons scored in the 110-meter hurdles, with the eighth-place clip of 16.10.

Wooster placed fifth in both relays that were contested at the championships. Scherson, junior Kristian Coleman, junior Troy Baughman, and junior Harvey Briscoe clocked in at 43.82 in the 4x100, while in the 4x400, Shilts, senior Matt Olszewski, first-year Kyle Stringer, and Scherson had a 3:30.54.

In the field events, Coleman measured out at 41 feet, 3.75 inches in the triple jump. Junior Mateo Renteria's javelin toss of 132 feet, 3 inches scored points for the Scots as well, as it was the seventh-best mark in the field.

Wabash College won its eighth NCAC title with 203 points. Ohio Wesleyan (137), Denison University (118), Wittenberg University (99), and Allegheny College (94) rounded out the top five.

Wooster's women are up next, with their NCAC Championships taking place on Sunday, May 9 at Denison University at 1 p.m.
