Men start indoor season with win, women place second

The College of Wooster men's and women's track and field teams kicked off its indoor season on Saturday hosting three schools for the Wooster Invitational.

The men showed off with a first-place finish with 161 points. Kenyon College followed with 94, Oberlin College trailed with 90 and Earlham College came in last with 72.

The women placed second with 118 points, trailing Oberlin's 158. Kenyon placed third at 109 and Earlham scored 52 points.

For the women, the relay teams closed the evening strong with two wins. The 4x400 team of senior Maya Vasta, junior Claudia Partridge, junior Haley Bloom and sophomore Athena Tharenos defeated Earlham's crew with a time of 4:25.75.

In the 4x200, Vasta and Partridge teamed with sophomore Drew Patterson and first-year Daysia Hargrave for a time of 1:52.49 to defeat Kenyon's time of 1:58.98.

Partridge and Patterson finished 1-2 in the high jump, both reaching 5 feet, 3.75 inches.

In the 400 meters, Tharenos (1:05.06) and Bloom (1:05.40) were neck-and-neck to finish first and second.

First-year Dylan Kretchmar won the 3,000 meter race with a time of 10:49.46.

Vasta was second in the 60 meters (8.43), and Hargrave was second in the 60 hurdles (10.23).

For the men, the 4x400 team of junior Joe Shilts, senior Nick Scherson, sophomore Kyle Stringer and first-year Ben Nichols won the three team race with a time of 3:42.43. Earlham came second at 3:45.82.

Junior Luke Henke reached six feet, 2.25 inches to claim first in the high jump.

Sophomores Dylan Garretson and Davis Patterson finished in the top two spots in the pole vault of the three-person field. Garretson reached 13 feet, 11.25 inches, and Patterson achieved 12 feet, 11.5 inches.

First-year Isaiah Kidd won the long jump with a marking of 20 feet, 11.75 inches.

Scherson raced to a tune of 53.02 in the 400 meters to win the race.

Juniors Justin Jones (9.74) and Brennen Testa (10.50) raced uncontested in the 60 hurdles for the top two finishes.

Senior Alex DeLong won the one mile in 4:29.50. First-year Will Callender followed with a win in the 3,000 meters and a time of 9:30.47.

The Scots return to action Saturday when they host the Fighting Scots Invitational.
