Women Win Easily, Men Take Thriller as Garretson Breaks Pole Vault Record

Dylan Garretson Thursday's dual meet against Denison University had a little bit of everything for The College of Wooster track and field teams.

The women won easily 88-25, while the men's results weren't decided until the final 4x400 race. Sophomore Davis Patterson anchored the squad, made the comeback and gave Wooster the 74-73 win.

The 4x400 team of Patterson, Joe ShiltsBen Nichols and Kyle Stringer finished in 3:38.49 to Denison's 3:38.85.

Meanwhile, sophomore Dylan Garretson broke a 33-year-old record in the pole vault.

Garretson succeeded in his first five vaults with the last reaching a mark of 15 feet, 3 inches. This surpassed the 15-feet indoor record set by Jeff Waugh in 1989.

Additionally, the mark is also tied for 12th nationally.

Other winners of the night included junior Luke Henke, who cleared 6 feet, .75 inches in the high jump for first place. First-year Vell Robinson took home the triple jump in 40 feet.

In the 4x200, Wooster's "B" team of Shilts, Nick SchersonLiam Regan and Craig Akiri had the fastest time at 1:34.34. However, the "A" team of Bryant Douglas IIKristian ColemanTroy Baughman and Harvey Briscoe fell right behind at 1:34.85 to score for the Scots.

Scherson later won the 400 meters in 52.10 seconds. Douglas II won the 60 meter dash in 7.29 seconds, and first-year Drew Robertson won the 800 in 2:05.02.

For the women, Drew Patterson won the high jump in 5 feet, 1 inch, and first-year Daysia Hargrave won the long jump in 16 feet, 3.25 inches. Patterson also won the triple jump uncontested at 31 feet, 6 inches.

In the pole vault, junior Morgan Kromer reached 10 feet, 6 inches in the fewest attempts to take first place.

Moving to the track events, Wooster won uncontested in the 4x200. The team of Maya Vasta, Patterson, Hargrave and Claudia Partridge raced to a time of 1:52.14.

First-year Dylan Kretchmar collected another win in her early goings as a Fighting Scot with a time of 5:18.09 in the 1 mile. She also ran a 2:32.92 to win the 800.

Hargrave timed in at 9.72 seconds to win the 60 meter hurdles. Igna Mendez won the 400 meters in 1:06.71 

Vasta won the 60 meter race in 8.30 seconds as well as the 200 meters in 27.56.

She later raced in the 4x400 with Haley Bloom, Mendez and Athena Tharenos as they won uncontested in a time of 4:34.02.

The Scots return to action Feb. 5 when they travel to Denison for the Bob Shannon Invitational.
