Scots Break Two Records, Win Five Events at Bob Shannon

Emily Munson College of Wooster track & field GRANVILLE, Ohio – Two school records fell, and The College of Wooster track & field program won five events at Saturday's Bob Shannon Invitational hosted by Denison University. Wooster's men placed third of seven teams, while the women took fourth of eight teams.

Sophomore Dylan Garretson, who broke Jeff Waugh's 1989 record in the pole vault just over a week ago, upped his record to 15 feet, 8.25 inches. Garretson currently ranks 10th nationally in the event and had the top mark by nearly two feet at the Bob Shannon Invitational.

First-years Will Callender and Ben Nichols solidified Wooster's third-place finish with 18 points in the 3,000 meters. Callender's 8:59.48 led the field of 14. Nichols supported Callender's win with the runner-up time of 9:03.52. Senior Alex DeLong collected the men's other first-place finish via the tape-breaking time of 4:27.07 in the mile.

First-year Isaiah Kidd scored key points in the jumps, placing second in both the long and triple jump. He went 21 feet, 8.75 inches in the long jump and the best triple jump measurement came out to 42 feet, 9.5 inches. Other top-four finishes in the jumps came from junior Luke Henke and first-year Vell Robinson. Henke topped out at 6 feet, 2.75 inches, which was third in the high jump, while Robinson extended the tape measure to 40 feet, 4 inches in the triple jump, and that was the fourth-place mark.

Junior Joe Shilts, senior Nick Scherson, first-year Liam Regan, and junior Craig Akiri's 1:35.82 was the runner-up time in the 4x200 relay, and first-year Drew Robertson crossed third in the 800 meters, stopping the watch at 2:04.89.

Wooster's mile crew headlined the women's results. Sophomore Athena Tharenos (5:22.13) and senior Kayla Bertholf (5:34.47) were the top two finishers on the day.

Senior Maya Vasta, sophomore Drew Patterson, first-year Daysia Hargrave, and first-year Emily Munson led the field in the 4x200 at 1:52.91. Hargrave tallied points in three events. She emerged as the runner-up in the 60-meter hurdles (9.38) and long jump (16 feet, 2.25 inches).

Vasta returned in the 200 meters, crossing at 27.22, which was the second-fastest time of the day. Bertholf closed her day by taking third in the 3,000 meters with a time of 11:20.03.

Patterson also stockpiled points toward the team score with fourth-place marks of 34 feet, 1.5 inches and 5 feet, 3 inches in the triple and high jump, respectively. Senior Morgan Kromer rounded out the top-four finishers, taking fourth in the pole vault (9 feet, 6.25 inches).

First-year Natalie Tanner broke the school record in the weight throw with a best toss of 45 feet, 0.25 inch. That mark was eighth at the meet.

Next, Wooster is off to Otterbein University for the All-Ohio Championships on Saturday, February 12. Action starts at 11 a.m.
