Scots Combine for Best Indoor Finish in Over 20 Years

Isabelle Hoover SPRINGFIELD – The College of Wooster men's and women's track and field teams each finished second in the North Coast Athletic Conference Indoor Track and Field Championships this weekend.

Both finishes were highs for the program in over 20 years. The men last peaked that high with a first-place finish in 1998, while the women placed second in 1997.

Overall, the Scots earned All-NCAC honors in 16 events, including 10 on Saturday. The men and women each won eight.

Wabash College placed first on the men's side with 151.5 points. Wooster scored 88, edging Wittenberg University (87) and Denison (84).

Oberlin College won on the women's side with 166.5 points. Wooster scored 101 to tie with DePauw University for second place. Ohio Wesleyan University placed fourth with 93.5 points.

Senior Isabelle Hoover claimed the NCAC's Indoor Women's Distance Runner of the Year award. Hoover followed up her 5,000-meter win by taking the 3,000 on Saturday in 10:32.11. She won despite losing her shoe in the initial scrum at the start, recovering and overtaking the entire field.

Senior Claudia Partridge started the day with a first-place finish in the high jump. Her jump of 5 feet, 6.5 inches broke the program indoor record and puts her nationally in the top-10.

Sophomore Dylan Garretson gave the men a jolt to start the day with a first-place finish in the pole vault. He reached 15 feet, five inches.

Later, senior Nick Scherson was the best in the 400-meter run by just .09 seconds (49.86 seconds) to be named NCAC Champion in the event.

First-year Bryant Douglas II placed second for All-NCAC honors in the 60-meter dash. His time of 7.05 seconds was .03 off first place, but it was good enough to set a new program record.

Luke Henke earned All-NCAC honors placing third in the high jump (6 feet, 4 inches) as did Alex DeLong with a 3rd place finish in the mile (4:17.23).

First-year Daysia Hargrave placed third in the 60-meter hurdles with a new program record indoor time of 9.08 seconds. Sophomore Athena Tharenos was another All-NCAC honoree after finishing third in the 800 with a time of 2:20.23.

Finally, the 4x400 relay teams both earned All-NCAC honors. Maya VastaHaley BloomIgna Mendez and Tharenos took second with a time of 4:07.11.

Then, the men won the first heat and ended third with a time of 3:26.34. That team consisted of Joe ShiltsMitch Ecklund, Scherson and Davis Patterson.

Also noteworthy, Drew Patterson finished fourth in the high jump (5 feet, 2.25 inches) and seventh in the triple jump (34 feet, .75 inches).

First-year Dylan Kretchmar was fifth in the mile (5:18.30). Vasta was sixth in the 60 dash (8.14 seconds) and fifth in the 200 (26.49 seconds).

Isaiah Kidd and Vell Robinson finished sixth and seventh in the triple jump, respectively. Shilts was seventh in the 60 hurdles (8.94 seconds).

DeLong also placed sixth in the 800 (2:02.76), and Douglas II was seventh in the 200 (23.01 seconds). First-year Will Callender ran an 8:51.36 for fifth in the 3000.

Next weekend the Scots head to Ohio Northern University for the Polar Bear Qualifier.
