Scots Shine at All-Ohio Championships

Daysia Hargrave, Wooster Track & Field DELAWARE, Ohio – The College of Wooster track & field team was simply remarkable at Saturday's All-Ohio Championships, with the Fighting Scots winning six events, earning 16 All-Ohio honors, and breaking a record. Wooster's women were third of 14 scoring teams, while the men claimed fourth-place of 13 scoring teams.

First-year Daysia Hargrave made arguably the biggest splash in her first All-Ohio outdoor meet. Hargrave earned double gold in the hurdles events, winning the 100-meter one in 14.89 and the 400-meter event at 1:06.47. The first-year earned four All-Ohio honors in all, taking second in the long jump at 16 feet, 8.75 inches and anchoring the Scots' third-place 4x100 relay. First-year Maia Doescher, senior Maya Vasta, and sophomore Drew Patterson joined Hargrave for the relay, which posted a time of 50.29.

Vasta's 4x100 honor marked the first of three All-Ohio times on the day. The senior's meet was capped by leading off the winning 4x400 relay. Junior Haley Bloom, first-year Igna Mendez, and sophomore Athena Tharenos followed suit on the way to the winning time of 4:09.37. Individually, Vasta's 26.48 was third in the 200 meters.

Just over a week removed from a career-best 10,000 meters time, Isabelle Hoover was at it again, this time in the 5,000 meters. The senior's 18:02.05 broke the tape, marked a new collegiate-best, and is the third-fastest time in program history.

Wooster claimed two of the three All-Ohio spots in the high jump. There, Patterson cleared 5 feet, 4.25 inches to take second and senior Claudia Partridge's 5 feet, 2.25 inches was third.

Sophomore Ainsley Wiesner's runner-up mark of 96 feet, 9 inches rounded out the All-Ohio honors on the women's side.

Other women's top-five finishes included Bloom (fourth, 400 meters, 1:02.63), first-year Dylan Kretchmar (fourth, 5,000 meters, 18:45.80; fifth, 3,000-meter steeplechase, 12:10.97), Mendez (fifth, 400, 1:03.42), and Tharenos (fourth, 1,500 meters, 4:51.60).

Leading the men's squad was sophomore Dylan Garretson, who now holds the program record for the indoor and outdoor pole vault. Garretson exceeded Tim Sir Louis' 1999 record of 15 feet, 4.25 inches en route to running away with Saturday's event. Garretson reached 15 feet, 7 inches, a mark that is currently tied for 11th in Div. III.

At meet's end, Wooster's men won the 4x400, with junior Joe Shilts, senior Nick Scherson, sophomore Mitch Ecklund, and sophomore Davis Patterson going for a 3:22.60. Prior to that, a trio of runner-up finishes were in the cards for Wooster. Senior Alex DeLong crossed at 3:58.89 in the 1,500 meters, Scherson went 50.21 in the 400 meters, and senior Will McMichael stopped the watch at 1:55.58 in the 800 meters. First-year Will Callender's third-place time of 15:35.48 rounded out the men's All-Ohio performances.

Other men's top-five finishes included senior Troy Baughman (fifth, javelin, 130 feet, 4 inches), junior Luke Henke (fifth, high jump, 5 feet, 10 inches), first-year Isaiah Kidd (fourth, long jump, 21 feet, 4 inches), Patterson (fifth, pole vault, 13 feet, 1.5 inches), and Shilts (fifth, 400 hurdles, 57.69).

Case Western Reserve University led the 14 scoring women's teams with 132 points. Host Ohio Wesleyan University was next at 125 points, while Wooster came in at 113.5 points. Denison University led the 13 scoring men's teams with 111.5 points. CWRU (111 points) and Ohio Northern University (80 points) ranked ahead of Ohio Wesleyan and Wooster, which both finished fourth with 76 points.

Next, Wooster is off to Kenyon College's Invitational on April 23. The meet is slated for an 11 a.m. start.
