Our "Senior Salute" series continues with Drew Robertson from the cross country and track and field team. Robertson is an education and mathematics major from Bébalem, Chad.
Q: Why did you choose to attend The College of Wooster?
A: I wanted a smaller campus where teacher-student relationships were common. Coach Dennis Rice offered me a spot on the cross country and track and field teams, and 18 relatives came to Wooster before me. I chose Wooster mainly for it being a non-Christian school, giving me an opportunity to learn from other perspectives while also sharing my faith with others.
Q: What does being a Fighting Scot student-athlete mean to you?
A: It means pursuing my academics for a future career and competing to the best of my ability as I honor God.
Q: What are some of your favorite memories as a student at The College of Wooster?
A: My favorite memories include senior farewells, alumni nights, game nights with Wooster Christian Fellowship, our overnight regional trip, the 2023 North Coast Athletic Conference Championships, and game nights with the cross country team. One main thing I fell in love with was the men's bible study. I formed deep friendships through the bible study and we did other fun activities, such as a Super Bowl part and we went to a concert.
Q: What is the best part about being a student-athlete at The College of Wooster?
A: I love getting opportunities to compete and train to get my body into peak shape. Being able to have an outlet for my competitive spirit to thrive makes focusing on academics easier.
Q: What else were you involved with on campus besides your sport?
A: I was involved with the Wooster Christian Fellowship for three years and was president for a year and a half. I played on the club volleyball team, am a member of the African Student Union, and took part in many intramural sports.
Q: Which College of Wooster faculty or staff member has made the greatest impact on you and why?
A: Every professor in the Education department had the greatest impact on me since it influenced my career trajectory. Each professor I had for education classes encouraged me to be a teacher and were super kind to me while also pushing me to work hard. My coaches have had an impact on my athletic career. Coach Rice has developed my raw talent to be a very successful runner. Coach Rice and my high school coaches influenced my character, teaching me to be a respectful and disciplined young man.
Q: What other people or resources impacted your Wooster experience in a positive way and how did these people and resources set you up to be successful at Wooster?
A: I have very much enjoyed the staff I work for in game operations, Cassidy. The job is a lot of fun and it helps me make some money for day-to-day expenses. My peers and classmates have helped me succeed by being great people. When I need help, my friends are there to give me support. I love our new director of athletics and physical education Lynn Holleran and many of the athletic staff. They have talked with me and showed they care for our success.
Q: Tell us a bit about your Independent Study project?
A: I am working with the Education department on a new path that allows me to focus my Independent Study on student teaching rather than mathematics. For my I.S., I need to identify a social or emotional need of the students in the classes I am working with. Once I identify a need, I will implement intervention into the curriculum and survey if it is actually beneficial.
Q: Tell us a bit about something cool you did as a student at The College of Wooster?
A: The biggest thing I have done at Wooster is go on a spring break trip with the track and field team in 2022 to Myrtle Beach. I remember going to the beach every day except the day of the meet and playing touch football, Spikeball, and frisbee. The trip was a lot of fun.
Q: Reflecting back on your time at Wooster, what advice would you give your first-year self?
A: I do not have any regrets. I have been living life to the fullest. The only thing maybe is to not download Instagram since it takes too much of my time and maybe focus a little more on a couple math classes. I am very content and joyful.
