Kym Wenz (North Ridgeville, Ohio / Avon Lake) of The College of
Wooster women's basketball team was named to the D3hoops.com
All-Great Lakes Region Second Team, the popular Web site announced
late Tuesday.
Wenz, who previously earned first-team all-North Coast Athletic
Conference accolades for her efforts during the 2008-09 season, was
the lone NCAC player among the 15 honorees in the Great Lakes
Region (three five-member teams). Also noteworthy, Wenz joins Nara
DeJesus, a second-team selection in 2001-02, as the only Fighting
Scots to have been all-region since D3hoops.com initiated the award
eight years ago.
A 5-7 junior guard, Wenz ranked among the top-40 NCAA Div. III
scoring leaders throughout the season, currently 33rd, at 18.6
points per game. That was tops in the NCAC, 2.5 points more than
anybody else. About one-fourth of her scoring came at the free
throw line, where she shot 84.4 percent (121-of-147) – the
second-best rate in the conference and 45th in the nation. Wenz,
who made 22-straight free throws at one point, also was fourth in
the NCAC in 3-pointers made (1.50 per game), seventh in 3-point
percentage (.375), and 10th in field-goal percentage (.411).
Wenz made an impact in all aspects of the game, averaging 5.2
rebounds, 2.1 assists, and 2.5 steals, leading the league in the
latter category. She registered five double-doubles, including
twice pulling down 11 boards, to go with six games with five-plus
steals.
Despite missing 12 games of her sophomore season due to injury,
Wenz is already the seventh Wooster player to have eclipsed the
1,000-point milestone at 1,017. Her career scoring average is 15.6
points and she'll likely set team records for free throws made and
3-pointers made with a healthy senior year.
The D3hoops.com all-region teams are voted on by each region's
sports information directors.
