Allegheny Drops Scots 62-45 in NCAC Quarterfinal Action

The College of Wooster women's basketball season came to an end Tuesday evening in Meadville, Pa., when it faced off against third-seeded Allegheny College in the North Coast Athletic Conference Tournament quarterfinals. The Fighting Scots' dreams were shattered when the host Gators handed them a 62-45 setback.

The opening minutes of the contest were tight, as the game was tied twice at 9-9 with 13:18 and 11-11 with 10:36 showing on the clock, but Allegheny (15-11) capitalized on runs of 7-2 and 15-5, sending the Gators into the intermission with a 15-point advantage at 33-18.

Wooster (8-18) notched the initial points of the second stanza on a lay-up by junior Kym Wenz on an assist from Kaitlin Krister, cutting the deficit back down to 13 with 18:24 left, but the Gators tallied 12 of the next 16 points over the next 5:34 of action, sealing any chances the Scots might have at a comeback. With the victory, the Gators move on to play second-seeded Kenyon College in the NCAC semifinals, hosted by top-seeded Denison University.

The Scots struggled from the floor, shooting 35.4 percent on the evening (17-of-48), including a chilly 2-for-11 for 18.2 percent from three-point range. Wooster was sharp from the foul line, sinking 75 percent of its attempts (9-of-12), while Allegheny was 88.9 percent from line (16-of-18), and finished the game 44.9 percent from the field (22-of-49), including connecting on 56 percent (14-of-25) of its attempts in the first half. A key to the Gators' success could very well have been their work on the glass. Allegheny dominated the rebounding battle, holding a 42-18 edge for the game over the visitors.

Leading the way was Wenz with a team-high 14 points and four steals, while Krister tallied nine points and four rebounds. Off the bench, Keshia Bulter added 10 points and three boards. Additionally, Samantha Justice grabbed a game-high five steals.

Also of note, Wenz finished her junior season scoring 483 points, the second-highest single-season point total in program history. She will head into her senior season with 1,017 career points. Her 18.6 points per game also ranks her fourth in the program's single-season laurels.

Leading the Gators was Laura Magnelli and Lauren Donahoe with 14 points apiece and combined for 11 rebounds, while Stephanie Wolf chipped in with 11 points and a game-best eight boards.
