Wenz Moves Into Second on All-Time Scoring List in Wooster’s 67-57 Win Over Earlham

WOOSTER, Ohio – With a team-high 17 points, Kym Wenz moved into second place on The College of Wooster women's basketball team's all-time scoring list, and led the Fighting Scots to a decisive 67-57 win over Earlham College in North Coast Athletic Conference action Saturday at Timken Gymnasium.

Just a week ago, Wenz became Wooster's all-time 3-point shooter, and it was another 3-pointer that moved her up the scoring ranks in this game. Following a slight 27-22 lead at the break, Wenz hit three-consecutive 3-pointers to spark a 20-3 Wooster run, with the last 3-ball surpassing Carly Loehrke's (2003-07) 1,338 career points. Wenz ended the game with 17 points, bringing her scoring total to 1,344 points and placing her second on the all-time list.

Taylor Keegan hit a 3-pointer with 10:47 remaining in the game that gave the Scots (6-10, 3-4 NCAC) a 21-point cushion, their largest lead in the game, but the Quakers (2-13, 1-5 NCAC) used the 3-ball to make one last run. Michelle Miranda, Katy Buda and Princess Darnell all drained shots from behind the arc during a 14-6 Earlham run, drawing them within 14 with 5:57 on the clock.

Earlham then scored another five unanswered points, creeping within 52-61, but Kaitlin Krister and Keegan went in on three-straight Wooster baskets, giving the Scots a 16-point advantage and sealing a commanding win.

It appeared Wooster was in trouble in the early goings, as Earlham raced out to a 9-0 lead during the initial ticks, but the Scots went on a 23-5 run that culminated in a Keegan 3-ball, which put them ahead 23-14. The 3-pointer was an interesting subplot to this game, as the teams combined to total 50 attempts, with Earlham going 11-of-34 while Wooster was good on 50 percent (8-of-16).

Along with a strong 3-point showing, Wooster was also solid in the paint, where Krister did her best work, scoring 15 points and adding three blocks. Wingen led the team with eight rebounds and added six points, and the Scots shot an impressive 46.7 percent (28-of-60) from the field, their second-highest outing this season.

Keshia Butler was a factor throughout the game as well, scoring five points and dishing out five assists, while snagging two steals in a solid 20 minutes.

Wenz finsihed with 17 points, including a 4-of-6 effort from 3-point land, while totaling five rebounds, five steals, and four assists.

Earlham was paced by Nikki Darrett's 17 points and six boards, while Miranda added 12 points and six boards, and Buda also had 12 tallies, all coming on 3-pointers.

The Scots, who have now won back-to-back games, and three of their last four, will travel to Oberlin College (3-12, 2-4 NCAC) on Wednesday for a 6 p.m. start.
