Wrong Scots Win in Turnover-Ridden Game at Timken

WOOSTER, Ohio – Kym Wenz scored 22 of her game-high 29 points in the second half, but it wasn't enough to overcome an Alma College lead that reached as much as 15, and The College of Wooster let a winnable game end in a 59-66 setback Friday night at Timken Gymnasium.

The Alma Scots (2-7) turned what was a six-point advantage at the break into a 15-point cushion when Meagen Hoblet knocked down a shot with 7:26 remaining in the game that put them ahead 48-33. From that moment on Wooster (2-7) began to creep back into the contest, as a Taylor Keegan 3-pointer at 3:48 drew them within nine (44-53). Wenz brought Wooster within seven (50-57) with her own 3-ball, and scored 13 points over the last 2:35, but Alma used the clock to its advantage and held on to record the win.

Neither team could hang on to the ball in the opening period, as Alma turned the ball over 15 times, and Wooster added another 16, but Alma turned Wooster's turnovers into 15 points compared to three. Following a Wenz 3-ball that put Wooster ahead 3-0 in the game's initials ticks, the Fighting Scots went on an 0-of-7 shooting slump, and didn't score again until a Samantha Justice free throw over four minutes into the action. A Samantha Sulzer basket put Wooster ahead 19-18 with 8:50 remaining in the first half, but that was the last time it held a lead in the game.

Alma and Wooster combined to amass 49 turnovers on the night, with Wooster accounting for a season-high 25. The Fighting Scots lost the rebound battle (32-46), which allowed Alma to produce 13 second-chance points, and a 30-12 advantage in points in the paint.

Wenz, who went to the break with seven points on 3-of-10 shooting, scored 22 points in the second half, which included three 3-pointers and a 7-of-7 effort from the charity stripe. Kaitlin Krister scored six points, but totaled eight rebounds and an impressive six blocks while patrolling the paint.

Hoblet paced Alma with 23 points on 10-of-16 shooting, and Kathryn Bigelow pulled down 10 boards, dished out eight assists, and collected four steals in an effective all-around effort.

Wooster will break for the holidays, but return to action on Wednesday, Dec. 30 to host Westminster College (3-6) at 2:30 p.m.
