WOOSTER, Ohio – The College of Wooster women's basketball team outscored Case Western Reserve University in the second half, but the early cushion that the Spartans had built was enough to hold off the Fighting Scots 61-44 in a non-conference match-up Saturday afternoon at Timken Gymnasium.

The Scots (3-3) went into the break trailing by 19, but were able to cut the deficit down to 11 just 6:18 into the second half. Jessica Wingen and Karley Walker combined to score all 13 points during Wooster's 13-4 scoring run, and Walker's lay-up with 13:42 remaining in regulation made it an 11-point game at 42-31.

The Spartans (4-3) pushed the advantage back up to 13 (44-31) moments later, until Walker dished to Wingen for an open jumper that pulled the Scots back within 11 at 44-33.

It was at that juncture when Case Western Reserve went on a quick 9-2 scoring run that all but put the game away. Sydney Grier did hit a pair of 3-pointers just 22 seconds apart late in regulation, but it was too little too late at that point.

The Scots were outrebounded 51-36, which led to the Spartans' 12 second-chance points.

Wingen racked up her fourth double-double of the young season with 16 points and 11 rebounds, and also recorded three blocked shots and two steals.

Next in line on the stat sheet was Maura Hall with 10 points, while Walker (5 assists) and Suvi Puripattarapan (7 rebounds, 4 steals) were also solid contributors in the setback.

Case Western Reserve was led by Evy Iacono, who scored 14 points and pulled down six boards.

Next up, the Scots will host non-conference opponent Waynesburg University (2-5) on Saturday at 2 p.m.
