Marietta Tops Wooster Despite Strong 3-Point Shooting Night from the Scots

The College of Wooster women's basketball team's stellar 3-point shooting continued, but host Marietta College gradually pulled away to triumph in an 83-74 non-conference tilt on Tuesday evening at Ban Johnson Arena in Marietta, Ohio.

Wooster (4-1), who entered the week 21st in all of Div. III in 3-point percentage, put on another impressive performance from behind the arc. For the game, the Fighting Scots sank 13 trifectas, a total tied for the second-most in a single game in program history.

Back-to-back 3-pointers from junior Danielle Besancon and first-year Anna Gibbs led the College on a 6-0 run late in the first period to give Wooster its first lead of the night at 14-13. Wooster held a one-point advantage after one period of play thanks to a jumper from senior Sydney Grier with :21 remaining.

Wooster last led with 7:44 remaining in the second period after a layup from Gibbs. The high resiliency displayed by the Scots to date was still showcased as the Pioneers (4-0) did not score more than four consecutive points for the duration of the half, but Marietta carried a 34-30 lead into the break.

Marietta pulled ahead early in the third period when a layup from Corrie Burkhardt capped a 7-0 Pioneer run to put the hosts up 43-31 with 7:17 remaining in the stanza.

Wooster had a spirited 7-0 swing in the early moments of the fourth period when Gibbs sank her second trifecta of the contest that would be followed with a free throw and 3-pointer from junior Rachel Collins. The run cut Marietta's lead to 12 at 65-53 with 7:23 remaining. However, Pioneers maintained a double-digit advantage until two free throws from Gibbs with :06 remaining.

Gibbs led the way for Wooster with a game-high 23 points, marking the second time in the last three games the first-year has scored at least 20 points. The Scots' point guard was backed up with 14 points from Collins, 13 from Lauren Hancher, and 11 from Grier.

Burkhardt led Marietta with 20 points and 17 rebounds. The Pioneers' Amisha Herd contributed a double-double with 14 points and 10 assists.

Wooster remains on the road for a 7:30 p.m. tilt at Case Western Reserve University (1-3) next week Wednesday, Dec. 2.
