Balanced Effort Propels Kenyon Past Wooster

 Lauren Hancher

Senior Lauren Hancher scored a game-high 22 points, but The College of Wooster women's basketball team could not withstand a well-rounded effort from Kenyon College in a 79-55 setback on Saturday afternoon inside Tomsich Arena at Gambier, Ohio.

For Hancher, the 22-point outing marked the third time this season the dual-sport standout has scored at least 20 points. Overall, it marked her 18th career game over the 20-point plateau.

Kenyon (10-6, 4-3 North Coast Athletic Conference) led wire-to-wire, opening the contest with a 6-0 run with three different Ladies contributing on the offensive end. For the game, all 11 players who saw playing time for Kenyon found the scoring column on the stat sheet.

Hancher put Wooster (5-11, 1-6 NCAC) on the board, hitting the front-end of a pair of free throws, prior to making a layup in transition that cut the Fighting Scots' deficit to three at 6-3 with 5:05 remaining in the opening frame.

Late in the opening period junior Sydney Failing had a pair of nice plays. First, the Lorain, Ohio native connected on a straight-away 3-pointer. Then, she came away with a key steal with 22 seconds remaining in the frame, and promptly found senior Sydney Grier for a nice layup.

Wooster found success inside in the third period with Hancher, junior Rachel Collins, sophomore Kyle Croxton, and first-year Christina Vukovich combining for four field goals in the paint. In addition, the Scots "drove the lane" and came away with numerous chances at the free throw line. First-year Anna Gibbs was a perfect 6-for-6 in the period at the charity stripe, as part of a 10-for-10 team output by the Scots.

Highlights from the fourth period included a nice and-one finish from Failing, a play that jump-started Wooster on a mini 7-2 run.

Kenyon had four players in double-figures, led by Miranda Diesz and Sharon Hull, who each scored 13 points.

Of note, Wooster took exceptional care of the basketball on the afternoon, only having 12 turnovers. The output marked the second straight game in which the Scots have had a dozen or fewer turnovers.

Wooster remains on the road with a 7:30 p.m. clash at Allegheny College (8-8, 3-4 NCAC) on Wednesday.
