Fourth Quarter Troubles Stall Scots in Loss

CINCINNATI, Ohio – A dominant fourth quarter performance led Mount Saint Joseph University to a 61-50 win over The College of Wooster women's basketball team in non-conference action on Wednesday.

The game was tied at 40 after three quarters until the Lions used a 9-0 run to begin the fourth quarter to pull ahead. The Scots could not find a basket until freshman Jenna Stanton connected on a jumper with just under five minutes remaining in the period.

Stanton, who finished with four points, scored again a minute later to bring the Scots to within eight, but that would be as close as they would get. Three-pointers from Kyle Croxton and Anna Gibbs in the final 2:10 would be the rest of the scoring for the Scots as they were outscored 21-10 in the final quarter.

Gibbs finished with 11 points and six assists to lead the Scots. Akwia Tilton scored 10 points and grabbed five rebounds.

Mount Saint Joseph's Maddie Haberthy led all scorers with 19 points, while Lainee Studer chipped in with 14 points, nine rebounds and five assists.

Wooster could not carry any of the momentum they created from a 19-14 third quarter where they took their first lead since early in the first quarter.

Facing a 26-21 deficit at halftime, Wooster created a 12-0 run to pull ahead 35-31 with 5:22 remaining. Gibbs scored six points in that span, while Tilton scored four. The teams traded leads for the rest of the quarter until a basket at the buzzer from Studer squared the game up at 40-40. 

Wooster shot 31 percent (21-for-67) for the game with an 18 percent (5-for-28) clip from deep and a 33 percent (3-for-9) showing at the free throw line. The Lions shot 40 percent (20-for-50) from the floor, 27 percent (4-for-15) from 3-point range and 81 percent (17-for-21) from the charity stripe.

The Lions edged the Scots on the boards 43-38 and off points in the paint 30-18. Wooster led in second chance points 9-6 and bench points 20-10.

Mount Saint Joseph improved to 6-3 with the victory, while Wooster dropped to 4-6.

Wooster is off until Dec. 28 when they take part in a two-day holiday tournament hosted at Capital University. The Scots play Carnegie Mellon University to open the tournament.
