Scots Close Non-Conference Schedule with 71-56 Loss to Kean

Maria Janasko

SALEM, Va. – The College of Wooster women's basketball team concluded the Susan Dunagan Holiday Classic at Roanoke College with a 71-56 loss to Kean University.

Senior Cat Fiorito scored a team-high 15 points on 6-of-8 shooting, while junior Maria Janasko recorded her third double-double with 11 points and 14 rebounds.

Kean (8-3) was led by a game-high 20 points from Shannon McCoy. Cindy Foresta had the game's other double-double with 12 points and 19 rebounds.

Wooster took the early lead after Akwia Tilton's opening layup but never saw it again after Kean tied it at 4-4 with 7:12 left in the first.

A tied game at 8-8, Kean went on a 10-0 run. However, Wooster scrapped their way back to make it an 18-16 game to end the first quarter as Fiorito and Nicholson combined to score the entire 8-0 run.

Fiorito tied it with the first basket in the second quarter, and the teams remained tied at 22 with 6:07 left in the first half. Kean then sank back-to-back 3-pointers and increased their lead to 11 with just over two minutes remaining in the half.

Wooster sparked a quick 7-0 run, highlighted by a Fiorito 3-pointer as the Scots cut the deficit to 37-31 at halftime.

Kean started the second half with six straight points before another Fiorito 3-pointer stopped the run. Kean led by as many as 12 in the third and led 54-43 with a quarter left to play.

Wooster started the fourth with six straight points to cut their deficit to five, but that would be the closest they would get.

The Scots shot just 26 percent (18-of-70) and were 3-of-25 from range (12 percent). However, they did shoot a healthy 81 percent (17-of-21) from the foul line.

Wooster outscored Kean 10-5 in bench points and 18-16 in second chance points. Tilton and Sarah Marion each added eight points, while A'Janay Nicholson added seven points off the bench.

Kean shot 43 percent from the floor (29-of-68) and outrebounded the Scots 50-47. They also outscored the Scots in the paint 44-26.

Janasko was named to the All-Tournament Team.

Wooster is now 4-7 overall. They host Kenyon College on Saturday to open 2020 and will look to improve upon their 0-2 North Coast Athletic Conference record.
