Scots Torched by Hot Shooting of Kalis, fall 69-51 to Wittenberg
Kalis drops 28 for Wittenberg as Tigers score season-high 69 points in win over Scots
SPRINGFIELD, Ohio -- Backed by a 28-point performance from senior Kristie Kalis, Wittenberg University defeated The College of Wooster women's basketball team 69-51 on Friday.
The Tigers scored a season-high in points backed by a season-high 11 3-pointers. Kalis connected on six of those 3's and went 11-for-24 from the field.
Collectively, the Tigers shot 43 percent (29-for-68) from the floor and 38 percent (11-for-29) from deep.
Wooster in retrospect struggled from the floor, shooting 30 percent (16-for-53) for the game and hitting just 19 percent (3-for-16) of their 3-pointers taken. However, they succeeded when getting to the foul line, shooting 70 percent on 16-of-23 attempts.
Senior Maria Janasko led the Scots with 13 points and seven rebounds. Masani Francis returned to the lineup to score 11 points, the only other Scot to reach double figures.
Wittenberg had four reach double-figures in scoring, including Kalis. Evie Wolshire recorded the game's lone double-double at 11 points and 11 rebounds.
Wooster started the game on the right foot. Kalis missed on Wittenberg's first two possessions before Sarah Marion connected on a 3-pointer and Janasko scored a layup as Wooster went ahead 5-0.
That lead vanished a minute later after 3-pointers from Mackenzie Pauley and Kalis put Wittenberg ahead for the first time in the game. It was a lead they would never lose.
Jenna Stanton scored to make it a 10-9 game, but Wittenberg would close the quarter on a 10-1 run.
Wooster showed some momentum early in the second quarter after free throws from Janasko and a layup from Francis cut the deficit to 23-18. Yet, Wittenberg answered with a 3-pointer that sparked a 14-2 run.
At halftime, the Tigers led 48-27.
Wooster had a better showing in the second half, outscoring Wittenberg 24-21. Harley Holloway scored four points in the third. Janasko and Alyssa Chritz combined for eight of Wooster's 12 points in the fourth.
Wittenberg outrebounded the Scots 40-31. They also outscored the Scots in the paint 34-20 and in points off turnovers 18-12. Wooster outscored Wittenberg's bench 15-11.
Wittenberg is now 2-3 on the year, while Wooster drops to 0-3. The two teams meet again Saturday when Wittenberg travels to Wooster for a 5 p.m. game in Timken Gymnasium. No spectators are allowed, but the live stream will be available at game time.
