Wooster's Bench Scores 30 in Loss to Ohio Wesleyan
Battling Bishops defeat Wooster 90-57
Ohio Wesleyan University defeated The College of Wooster women's basketball team 90-57 on Thursday.
The Battling Bishops were led by the duo of Cierra Joiner and Lauren Denison who scored 27 and 23 points, respectively. Two others reached double figures in scoring for Ohio Wesleyan, Kasey Schipfer with 15, and Kenzie Purkey with 12.
Senior Sarah Marion was the lone Scot to reach double figures. She scored 10 points, connecting on all four of her field goal attempts, including two 3-pointers. Harley Holloway scored nine points off the bench, and Namara Rwakatare provided a nice spark with six points and seven rebounds.
Masani Francis scored eight points, Krista English added six and Riley Thorr scored five.
Wooster fell behind initially as Ohio Wesleyan went ahead 8-2, but Wooster cut the deficit to three at 10-7 midway through the first. However, Ohio Wesleyan would have another run to go up 21-7 with 2:36 left in the first quarter.
Wooster once again fought back in the second quarter and used an impressive 13-2 run to cut Ohio Wesleyan's lead to 29-24. Holloway started the run with a 3-pointer, which was followed by back-to-back goals from Rwakatare.
After trading baskets, Francis closed the run with her first four points of the game. Yet, Ohio Wesleyan abruptly stopped the run with a 3-pointer and a 4-point play. At halftime, Ohio Wesleyan grew their lead to 50-30.
Wooster won the third quarter 19-17 as Marion and Holloway each scored five in the quarter. Then in the fourth, Ohio Wesleyan eventually captured their biggest lead at 33 as Wooster gave playing time to a total of 16 players.
Ohio Wesleyan succeeded in running the floor with 18 fast break points as well as getting the ball in low, finishing with 40 points in the paint. Wooster's bench was a highlight as they put up 30 points.
The Battling Bishops shot 43 percent (30-for-70) for the game, while Wooster shot 34 percent (19-for-56). Ohio Wesleyan shot 31 percent (4-for-13) from 3-point range and got to the free throw line 33 times, connecting on 26 attempts (79 percent). Wooster shot well from the foul line too at 75 percent (15-for-20), but struggled from deep, scoring on just 4-of-20 attempts (20 percent).
Ohio Wesleyan improves to 5-2. Wooster drops to 0-5. The two teams meet again Saturday at Ohio Wesleyan.
