Scots Head into Break Winners of Two Straight
Wooster defeats Hiram 66-58 as three reach double figures in scoring
The College of Wooster women's basketball team won its second consecutive North Coast Athletic Conference game on Saturday with a 66-58 win over Hiram College.
Three Scots scored in double figures as sophomore Harley Holloway scored a game-high 17 points. Classmate Alyssa Chritz recorded her first double-double of the season with 16 points and a game-high 12 rebounds. Meanwhile, senior Masani Francis finished with 11 points, six rebounds and a team-high five assists.
Wooster turned the tide in its favor after trailing 11-6 with a 12-0 run in the first quarter. Jenna Stanton started the run with a layup, and Holloway tied the game with a 3-pointer.
Holloway hit another 3-pointer on the next possession to give Wooster its second lead of the game.
Wooster led by two at the end of one then 37-33 at halftime. In the third, Chritz gathered an offensive rebound and promptly hit a 3-pointer to make it 48-37 with 4:26 left in the quarter.
Wooster's lead dropped to 50-47 at the end of the third, but the Scots opened the fourth on a 6-0 run and would later hold its largest lead at 61-50 with 4:16 remaining in the game.
That sparked a 8-0 run from Hiram until Francis hit two free throws with 1:42 left. From there, Stanton connected on a layup and later made a free throw to put the game out of reach.
The senior Stanton finished with nine points for the Scots, and first-year Maia Doescher came off the bench to score seven on 3-of-3 shooting. Namara Rwakatare battled down low and came away with eight rebounds.
Hiram (3-8, 0-4 NCAC) was led by Haley Thompson, who tailied 14 points and eight rebounds.
Wooster shot 36 percent from the floor (23-of-64), edging Hiram who shot 32 percent (21-of-65).
The Scots went 6-of-22 from deep (27 percent) and once again shot well from the line at 78 percent (14-of-18). The Scots scored 23 points off turnovers and scored more points in the paint at 30-24.
Wooster moves to 3-7 overall and 2-2 in conference play. They are off until Dec. 29 when they travel to Marietta College for two games in the Jim Meagle Holiday Classic.
