Senior Salute: Masani Francis

Masani Francis Q&A Throughout the spring semester, we are honoring our senior student-athletes with a "Senior Salute" series. Today's featured senior is Masani Francis, a philosophy and political science major from Pocono Mountains, Pennsylvania. Francis is a member of the women's basketball team.

Q: Why did you choose to attend The College of Wooster?
A: It gave me an opportunity to continue playing basketball at a competitive level, as well as an excellent and challenging education.

Q: What does it mean to you to be a Fighting Scot student-athlete?
A: You must be dedicated to both your academics and your sport to be a Fighting Scot student-athlete. The athletics community as a whole is incredibly supportive throughout the teams.

Q: What are some of your favorite memories as a student at The College of Wooster?
A: My favorite memories as a student here are when I am spending time with my teammates or with my friends.

Q: What's the best part about being a student-athlete at The College of Wooster?
A: The best part about being a student-athlete at Wooster is the relationships you gain.

Q: What else were you involved with on campus besides your sport?
A: I am the vice president of Black Students Association (BSA), a Student-Athlete Advisory Committee representative, a member of Black Women's Organization (BWO), and a NAACP member.

Q: Which College of Wooster faculty or staff member has made the greatest impact on you and why?
A: Dr. (Álvaro) Corral has made a huge impact on me because I have had several classes with him and was able to be a teaching apprentice for him. The classes I took with Dr. Corral were some of the best courses I took in my time at Wooster. He is also a huge Wooster women's basketball fan, and it is always a pleasure to see him in the crowd.

Q: What other people or resources impacted your Wooster experience in a positive way and how did these people/resources set you up to be successful at Wooster?
A: Dr. (Avi) Muñoz has impacted my experience as my Independent Study advisor. I have Dr. (Karen) Haely and Dr. (Elizabeth) Schiltz to thank for encouraging me to become a philosophy major.

Q: Tell us a bit about your Independent Study project?
A: I am looking at philosophical frameworks that would allow the least amount of economic inequality and applying that politically by looking for evidence of discussion of race and class in economic bills and laws in Congress.

Q: Tell us a bit about something cool you did as a student at The College of Wooster?
A: We had a team trip to Roanoke, Virginia, over winter break.

Q: Reflecting back on your time at Wooster, what is one piece of advice you would give your first-year (freshman) self?
A: I would tell myself that everyone says it goes so fast, but it really does. With everything that our year has been through, I would just say to enjoy all the small moments and not worry too much about the future.
