Wooster Stays Close But Can’t Overcome Poor Second Quarter
Scots fall to Waynesburg 59-55
WAYNESBURG, Pa — The College of Wooster women's basketball team had its two-game winning streak snapped on Monday after a 59-55 loss at Waynesburg University.
Sophomore Ace Sturdivant led all scorers with 19 points. Sturdivant added nine rebounds and five assists.
First-year Mackenzie Riccitelli added 10 points, while Waynesburg was led by 18 points from Madisen Dayton.
Wooster came out strong with a 17-10 first quarter advantage, shooting 6-of-11 from the floor and 2-of-4 from deep.
The second quarter was a different story, connecting on just 2-of-17 shots. Waynesburg (4-0) upped their percentage to 50 percent and held a 27-22 lead at halftime.
Sturdivant had seven points at half to lead the team. First years Ellery Kloek and Emily Webb each had five.
Wooster never recovered from its poor second quarter as both teams played mostly even for the remainder of the game.
The Scots got to within two points near the start of the fourth quarter after a pair of free throws from Kloek. They inched closer midway through after a layup from Riccitelli to make it 49-48.
However, Wooster could never get over that hump. Even with a minute left, Wooster kept it close, but could not get a key stop.
Wooster shot 35 percent (20-of-51) for the game, but free throws once again hurt the Scots in the loss, shooting 46 percent (10-of-22).
Waynesburg shot 31 percent (26-of-84) and went 5-of-6 (83 percent) from the foul line.
Junior Ella Dean saw her first minutes of the season coming off the bench. First-year Lynx Lander put up a season-best 7 points on 3-of-5 shooting.
Next, Wooster (2-2) hosts Capital University on Nov. 26.
