Kloek Scores 13 in NCAC Opener
Wooster battles Oberlin in 64-52 loss
The College of Wooster women's basketball team opened North Coast Athletic Conference play on Wednesday with a home loss to Oberlin College, 64-52.
First-year Ellery Kloek scored a team-and career-high 13 points on 3-of-4 shooting from beyond the arc.
Junior Ella Dean connected on three 3-pointers as well, scoring a season-high 11 points off the bench.
First-year Mackenzie Riccitelli added 10 points and five rebounds, while sophomore Ace Sturdivant put together a rounded performance of eight points, eight assists and three rebounds.
Oberlin was led by a 16-point, 11-rebound performance from Camille Zinaich.
Wooster opened strong with Kloek scoring the team's first four points. Slightly later, a 3-pointer from Riccitelli and a layup from Dean gave Wooster its largest lead at 9-2 midway through the first.
Wooster led 11-10 after the first and found themselves tied with Yeowomen at 28 at halftime.
Wooster's defense was key in the first half, limiting Oberlin to shooting 32 percent (11-34) from the floor and just 20 percent (2-10) from deep.
Oberlin did not shoot that way in the second half, taking the third quarter 19-8 with a game-high 15-point scoring run and leading by much as 14 in the fourth quarter.
Yet, Wooster showed some fight in the fourth quarter turning a 12-point deficit into just five with 4:50 remaining. In their 9-0 stretch, Erica Beaty, Lynx Lander and Sturdivant all hit two-pointers before Kloek capped it with a 3-pointer.
However, once Oberlin recovered they went on its own 9-0 run to effectively put the game away.
Overall, Wooster shot 36 percent (20-55) from the floor, while Oberlin finished at 43 percent (26-60). Oberlin used its size to outscore Wooster in the paint, 34-16, and won the rebounding battle, 37-33.
Oberlin moves to 5-3 overall and 1-0 in the NCAC, while Wooster falls to 2-4 overall and 0-1 in conference play.
Next, the Scots stay at home with a non-conference matchup against Carnegie Mellon University on Friday.
