Wooster Comeback Not Enough Versus Hornets

The College of Wooster women's basketball team got within four points after trailing by as many as 18 against Kalamazoo College on Tuesday but ended up losing 65-57.

The Scots exceled in the second half, outscoring the Hornets 30-22. However, Kalamazoo's quick start was large enough to quell Wooster's comeback.

Early on, junior Erica Beaty did her best to keep the Scots within range, scoring nine of the team's 13 first quarter points. After sophomore Ace Sturdivant opened with Wooster's first four points, Beaty came off the bench to score the next nine.

Beaty did it every way she could as well, going 3 of 4 from the floor, 1 of 1 from range and 2 of 2 from the foul line. She ended the game with 11 points, which is a new career-high.

Kalamazoo led 22-13 after one quarter and quickly expanded its lead to 31-15 just 2:30 into the second quarter. At halftime, the Hornets led 43-27.

First-year Mackenzie Riccitelli led Wooster's second half charge, scoring 16 of her game-high 20 points in the half.

Wooster (2-7) trailed by 12 at the end of the third, 53-41. In the fourth, they put together their best scoring run, 9-0, to trail by just four at 61-57 with 1:24 remaining.

Kalamazoo (4-5) called a timeout, which proved beneficial. They scored following the break and caused a turnover on Wooster's next possession to seal the game.

Kalamazoo was led by Ruby Hogan, who also scored 20 points.

For Wooster, Ella Dean scored eight points on a pair of 3-pointers, and Sturdivant finished with seven points.

The Scots will be back in action Wednesday when they take on Alma College.
