Scoring Drought Dooms Wooster on the Road
Oberlin scores 22 straight to pull away from Scots
OBERLIN – It was a wide-open game Wednesday after a competitive first quarter between The College of Wooster women's basketball team and Oberlin College.
However, Oberlin pulled away in the second quarter to eventually take a 63-41 win in North Coast Athletic Conference action.
In the first quarter, the Scots were on par statistically with the Yeowomen while both teams traded runs.
Oberlin scored the first four, before Wooster scored the next five behind a 3-pointer from Erica Beaty and a two from Ace Sturdivant.
Oberlin (11-9, 5-4 NCAC) then embarked on a 7-0 run before Ella Dean broke that streak with a layup off an assist from Sturdivant. Wooster had a 6-0 run to tie the game at 13 before the teams tied at 15 to end the quarter.
The second quarter set the tone for the rest of the game. After Dean hit a 3-pointer to give Wooster (4-16, 1-8 NCAC) an 18-17 lead early on, Oberlin turned up its aggression on defense.
They did not allow the Scots to score again in the quarter, using a 17-0 run to close the quarter to take a 34-18 lead at halftime.
The run went to as high as 22 before the game went back to its normal course with Oberlin winning the third and fourth quarters by just three points each.
Dean and Mackenzie Riccitelli each scored nine points to lead the Scots. Dean also had a team-high seven rebounds.
Beaty scored eight points, and Sturdivant finished with seven. Ella Biondi had four points and four blocks.
Off the bench, Anna Hardink and Kylie Parsons each scored two points.
Oberlin's Krystal Montas led all scorers with 14.
Wooster shot below 30 percent (15 of 56) for the second time this season, but they shot better (22 percent) than Oberlin (15 percent) from 3-point range.
Wooster turned it over 21 points, which led to 24 points. Oberlin also won the rebounding battle 46-38.
The Scots host Denison University on Saturday.
