Senior Salute: Devon Matson

Devon Matson sidebar Q&A

Throughout the spring and summer, we'll be honoring our senior student-athletes with a "Senior Salute" series. Today's featured senior is Devon Matson, an archaeology and history major from Brunswick, Ohio. Matson is a member of the women's golf team.

Q: Why did you choose to attend The College of Wooster?
A: I was interested in playing golf at the College and I knew Wooster had a good program. I was also interested in being able to do an Independent Study project. I loved the feel of the campus and knew I would feel at home here when I arrived in Wooster for a visit.

Q: What does it mean to you to be a Fighting Scot student-athlete?
A: Being a student-athlete means representing the school through good sportsmanship and respect both on and off the course. It means dedicating your time not only to your academics, but also to your team and your sport. Being a Fighting Scot student-athlete is an honor and a responsibility that I take pride in.

Q: What are some of your favorite memories as a student at The College of Wooster?
A: Some of my favorite memories are spring break with the golf team because of all the things we get to do and see in Hilton Head Island. Being a member of Delta Theta Psi has also provided me with great memories and times with friends.

Q: What's the best part about being a student-athlete at The College of Wooster?
A: The best part of being a student-athlete is the bond that you form with your teammates. You have a core group of people that you can rely on, which is extremely beneficial, especially as a first-year.

Q: What else were you involved with on campus besides your sport?
A: I am part of the sorority Delta Theta Psi, the Archaeology Student Colloquium, the Wooster Activities Crew, and the campus chapter of Phi Alpha Theta (history honor society).

Q: Which College of Wooster faculty or staff member has made the greatest impact on you and why?
A: Coach (Lisa) Campanell Komara has had the most impact on me. She has supported me through difficult times, both on and off the course. She has also demonstrated her own strength through her personal struggles with breast cancer, which has been a great inspiration for me.

Q: What other people or resources impacted your Wooster experience in a positive way and how did these people/resources set you up to be successful at Wooster?
A: Dr. (P. Nick) Kardulias has had a positive impact on me because he was my Introduction to Archaeology professor. Without him, I would not have realized how much I love archaeology and would have missed out on a lot of the opportunities that the major has provided me.

Q: Tell us a bit about your Independent Study project?
A: My Independent Study is about the representation of homoerotic relationships between women in ancient Greek art. I'm creating a digital exhibit that will show the pieces and use queer and feminist theory to explain my interpretation of each piece.

Q: Tell us a bit about something cool you did as a student at The College of Wooster?
A: I was able to go to Cyprus on an archaeological dig one summer. Dr. Kardulias was one of the heads of the dig, so he informed me of the program and helped me apply. It was the best thing that I have done as a student and something I will never forget.

Q: Reflecting back on your time at Wooster, what is one piece of advice you would give your first-year (freshman) self?
A: Take every opportunity you are given. Say yes to doing things with friends and be open to new experiences. Join clubs and find what you like. The time goes by quicker than you realize. Wooster has so much to offer, so take advantage of that.
