Senior Salute: Tongtong Wu

Tongtong Wu sidebar Q&A

Throughout the spring and summer, we'll be honoring our senior student-athletes with a "Senior Salute" series. Today's featured senior is Tongtong Wu, a psychology major from Shenzhen, China. Wu is a member of the women's golf team.

Q: Why did you choose to attend The College of Wooster?
A: I wanted to play college golf while having a great academic experience where I could learn to conduct research. Wooster is a diverse campus with students from all over the country and the world.

Q: What does it mean to you to be a Fighting Scot student-athlete?
A: Being a Fighting Scot means that you have to keep a good balance between academics and athletics while exploring yourself in many extracurricular activities. Wooster is a place that always pushes me to challenge myself more and grow.

Q: What are some of your favorite memories as a student at The College of Wooster?
A: The annual culture show is my favorite memory, as I can enjoy performances from different cultures and cheer for my friends.

Q: What's the best part about being a student-athlete at The College of Wooster?
A: Being able to compete and represent Wooster on the golf course. I also like building connections with my coaches and teammates on a daily basis to form a big family on campus.

Q: What else were you involved with on campus besides your sport?
A: I was a secretary for the International Student Association and vice president for the Women's Athletic and Recreation Association. I was also a research assistant for Dr. Jennifer Hayward and Dr. Katherine Holt.

Q: Which College of Wooster faculty or staff member has made the greatest impact on you and why?
A: Dr. Holt has changed me a lot since my first year here. Her Modern Brazil class peaked my interest in Latin American history and culture in general, which inspired me to study abroad in Argentina. Her Modern Latin America class led to me analyzing history and societies from various perspectives. Besides taking classes with her, working as an assistant for Dr. Holt provided me great opportunities to observe and participate in course design.

Q: What other people or resources impacted your Wooster experience in a positive way and how did these people/resources set you up to be successful at Wooster?
A: English language support at the Learning Center has been helpful through my time here, especially working with Carla Reyes. She helped me transition from high school to college and trained me to become a critical thinker and writer.

Q: Tell us a bit about your Independent Study project?
A: My project is on mental health during COVID-19 under the impact of news media. I wanted to work on this project because I felt anxious and depressed since my golf season was canceled for the whole year in March 2020. I also observed the uncertainties brought by the pandemic. News media has been crucial right now, but it can also impact individuals' mental health after seeing the chaos. Besides researching anxiety and depression, I also looked at empathy during this turbulent time.

Q: Tell us a bit about something cool you did as a student at The College of Wooster?
A: I studied abroad twice in Argentina (2018 & 2019). The first time, I was enrolled in an English instruction program, and I became very curious about Argentine society and culture, so I decided to learn Spanish to communicate better with locals and learn knowledge that is not available in English. Studying abroad gave me an opportunity to explore a new environment and culture by myself. Even though I arrived in Argentina knowing a little Spanish, I eventually became proficient and built new connections there with professors and students.

Q: Reflecting back on your time at Wooster, what is one piece of advice you would give your first-year (freshman) self?
A: If the situation allows, participate in multicultural events and meet different people. Wooster is more diverse than you think.
