WGCA Recognizes Trio of Scots for Academic Excellence
Cooke, Matson, Wu named WGCA Scholar All-Americans
WGCA Scholar All-America Release
For the third time in its 11-year history, The College of Wooster women's golf team has at least a trio of qualifiers for the Women's Golf Coaches Association All-American Scholar Teams. Seniors Devon Matson and Tongtong Wu capped their careers as four-time honorees, while first-year Melissa Cooke rounds out this year's qualifiers.
Matson and Wu join alumnae Sharmeen Chinoy and Emily Howerton as four-time WGCA All-America Scholars. Cooke's the eighth different Fighting Scot to appear on the list.
Cooke ranked third on the team with a 92.3 average over 12 rounds. The Scots' rookie carded a season-best 82 in the opening round of a 36-hole dual against Allegheny College and had four rounds in the 80s.
Matson, a three-time member of the North Coast Athletic Conference Academic Honor Roll, logged a 101.8 average over nine rounds this spring. Matson's low round of 99 came at the Wooster Easter Dual.
Wu, a two time All-NCAC performer and three-time member of the NCAC Academic Honor Roll, averaged 86.6 strokes over 12 rounds this spring, with that average ranking second on the team. Wu was a medalist for a program-record fourth time during a 36-hole dual with Allegheny this spring. Her 159 at that outing marked the second time in program history a student-athlete posted three 159s or better in 36-hole tournaments.
Wooster's honorees were among the 1,432 women's collegiate golfers who qualified this year. Eligibility criteria includes student-athletes having at least a 3.50 cumulative GPA and playing in at least 50 percent of the team's rounds.
Of note, seven of Wooster's 20 all-time WGCA Scholar All-America honors have come in the last two years.
