Wooster Wins on Tiebreaker, Matches Program History

Melissa Burtscher, Wooster Golf WILLOUGHBY Hills, Ohio – First-year Abby Haywood's 177 broke a tie between The College of Wooster women's golf team and the University of Mount Union, making the Fighting Scots winners of the John Carroll University Fall Invitational, which was held on Saturday and Sunday at Manakiki Golf Course. Wooster, which finished at 656, collected tournament title three, matching the 2018-19 and 2021-22 teams for the most tournament titles in program history.

Wooster entered Sunday looking up at Mount Union, which had an eight-stroke advantage. Additionally, Wooster and North Coast Athletic Conference archrival Wittenberg University were deadlocked after opening-round 332s. Haywood's 177 ranked three strokes better than Mount Union's Kamil Stephens' 180, and that handed the Scots the hardware. Haywood was 28th overall after rounds of 88 and 89.

Junior Ally Siewert was the runner-up in the 71-competitor field after a solid 158. Siewert closed the tournament with a 78 after opening with an 80.

Senior Melissa Burtscher followed with a 164, which ranked 10th in the field. Burtscher's closing 78 marked an eight-stroke bounce back from Saturday's 86.

First-year Morgan Erdmann's 166 was part of the tie for 13th-place. Erdmann had rounds of 84 and 82. Senior Grace Lindgren was Wooster's other scorer at 168, which ranked 16th. Lindgren's 82 was Wooster's second-lowest Saturday score, and she signed for an 86 on Sunday.

First-year Paige Nicely rounded out Wooster's lineup in the play-six, count-four format. Nicely's 183 ranked tied for 34th-place. Nicely opened with an 89 and closed with a 94.

Wooster's quest for an unprecedented fourth tournament title in a season begins at Wittenberg University's Fall Classic, which takes place October 15-16 at Springfield Country Club. The event is Wooster's final one of the fall season.
