Siewert Breaks Program Record in Style with Medalist Honor
Senior now has the most career top-five finishes in program history
GROVE CITY, Pennsylvania – Senior Ally Siewert's first breakage of a College of Wooster women's golf career record was certainly memorable, as the Fighting Scots' standout was the medalist with a career-best 1-over-par 73 at Thursday's Grove City College Fall Invitational. Siewert helped Wooster to its third consecutive runner-up finish, as the Scots' 328 ranked just behind Westminster College's 326 at the par-72, 5,734-yard Grove City Country Club.
Siewert was already in prime position to become the program's all-time leader in top-five finishes at traditional tournaments (minimum of four teams), and then she went out and ran down a third career medalist honor. Siewert pulled into first-place with a birdie on the par-5, 480-yard 16th hole, and she seized total control with a consecutive birdie on the par-4, 318-yard 17th hole. The birdie on No. 17 was Siewert's fourth of the day. She closed with a par on the par-5, 407-yard 18th hole to secure the career-best 73, which is the sixth-lowest score in program history. Siewert shot 1-under-par on Grove City Country Club's back nine, with her other birdie coming on the short par-4, 275-yard 13th hole. The top-five finish marked Siewert's 19th, moving her past alumna Melissa Burtscher for the most in program history. She is now one back of matching alumna Tongtong Wu for most medalist honors at four.
Morgan Erdmann's season-best 81 propelled the sophomore to her first top-five showing of the year. Erdmann sank an early birdie in the shotgun-started round. That came on the par-4, 291-yard sixth hole. A second birdie dropped for Erdmann on No. 17, and she played 11 of the holes at par or better en route to the fourth-place showing. Of note, the sophomore played the four par-5 holes at even par for the day.
Wooster is back to having four active team members with a competition eagle after sophomore Abigail Haywood second shot on the par-4, 275-yard 12th hole found the bottom of the cup. Haywood's eagle was crucial in helping the sophomore to a 3-over-par 39 on the back nine. Haywood played four of those holes at par or better as part of an 81 overall, which tied a season-best. Haywood tied for fifth-place for a second straight top-five finish.
Sophomore Paige Nicely's 92 ranked 29th in the field and rounded out Wooster's scorers for the day. Classmate Lizzy Hohman signed for a 94 and tied for 33rd-place.
Siewert's 73 beat out Saint Vincent College's Lucy Brayton's 76 for medalist honors. Westminster's Katie Rose Rankin was the third-place individual at 79.
Next, Wooster hosts Ohio Wesleyan University for a dual match on Saturday, September 28 at Riceland Golf Course in Orrville, Ohio. Action gets underway at 11 a.m.
