Scots Break, Match Individual Bests at JCU Fall Invite
Siewert cards second 73 of the fall
WILLOUGHBY, Ohio – One College of Wooster Fighting Scot set a new career-best, two matched their low collegiate rounds, and another was a stroke off a collegiate-best at this weekend's John Carroll University Fall Invitational, which was held at the par-72, 5,603-yard Manakiki Golf Club. Wooster placed fifth of nine scoring teams with a two-day 695.
Senior Ally Siewert carded her second 73 of the fall and her third round at 1-over-par. Siewert's career-best-matcher came on Saturday, and again was led by a dominating closing stretch. Siewert played holes 15 through 18 at Manakiki at 2-under-par, with birdies finding the cup on the par-4, 310-yard 16th hole and the par-4, 319-yard 18th hole. Siewert's first birdie of the day dropped on the par-5, 424-yard sixth hole, and the senior played 14 of the holes at par or better. The 73 marked Siewert's fourth career round of 75 or better, a total tied with alumna Melissa Burtscher for the most in program history. Siewert was the third-place finisher at the tournament at 157. She signed for an 84 on Sunday.
Sophomore Abigail Haywood's sustained steadiness led to a season-best 79 on Saturday. Haywood's Saturday score ranked one off a collegiate-best. The sophomore was 1-under-par through five holes Saturday, with the birdie falling on the par-5, 451-yard third hole. Haywood turned at 2-over-par and remained at 2-over-par through 11 holes, with nine holes at par or better during that stretch. Haywood finished tied for 13th-place with a two-day 167. Haywood's Sunday was headlined by a four-hole stretch of pars on the back nine.
Sophomore Paige Nicely led Wooster on Sunday with a career-best-matching 82. Nicely played nine holes at par or better and was 5-over-par on both the front and back nine at Manakiki. Nicely played the par-5 holes at even par on Sunday, thanks to a birdie on the 460-yard 12th hole. She also had a par on three of the four par-3 holes. Nicely finished at 171, which was tied for 20th-place. The sophomore opened with an 89 on Saturday.
Sophomore Lizzy Hohman placed 52nd and rounded out the scorers. Hohman opened with a 97, with a birdie on the par-3, 138-yard 11th hole headlining the round. She finished the tournament 1-under-par on No. 11 after a par dropped in on Sunday. Sophomore Serena Grenga debuted in Wooster's lineup and placed 61st.
Junior Alexis Neal competed as an individual and set a new collegiate-best on Saturday with a 104.
DePauw University was the top scoring team at 640. The Tigers' Becky Williams was the medalist with a 1-over-par 145.
Next, Wooster wraps up its fall season at the Wittenberg University Fall Classic, held October 20-21 at Springfield Country Club.
