Haywood, Nicely Card Collegiate-Bests in Fall Finale
Haywood's 156 tied for fifth-best 36-hole tournament score in program history
SPRINGFIELD, Ohio – Sophomores Abigail Haywood and Paige Nicely capped the fall season with new collegiate-bests to lead a charge by The College of Wooster women's golf team in the final round of Wittenberg University's Jeff Roope Invitational. Wooster improved by 16 strokes in the final round, with the team's 327 ranking one off the program's low round of the fall. Wooster finished the two-day tournament fifth of eight scoring teams at 670.
Haywood played well both days for the Fighting Scots, placing eighth at 156, which is tied for the fifth-best 36-hole tournament score in program history. The sophomore's closing 76 marked a new collegiate-best by two strokes, and it was round two in the 70s this fall. Haywood played 13 holes at par or better on Monday, headlined by a birdie on the par-4, 360-yard 15th hole. Haywood logged a run of six straight pars, starting on No. 6, in Monday's shotgun-started round. The sophomore played Springfield Country Club's front nine at 1-over-par in the collegiate-best. Haywood was 1-over-par on par-5 holes and 2-over-par on par-4 holes. On Sunday, Haywood shot an 80, ending the round with a birdie on the par-4, 378-yard 18th hole. Haywood played Sunday's final four holes at even par and had nine pars in the round.
Nicely broke 80 for the first time in college, checking in at 79 on Monday. The sophomore placed in a tie for 28th-place at 169. Nicely was 2-over-par through 10 holes on Monday. A birdie went down early for Nicely, with that coming on the par-5, 470-yard 17th hole. Two more birdies followed upon turning to the front nine, with those scored on the par-3, 160-yard third hole and the par-5, 488-yard fifth hole. Nicely played 10 holes at par or better on Monday. Nicely's tournament was off to a strong start, as the sophomore was 1-under-par through three holes on Sunday. Nicely's birdie came at the par-4, 412-yard second hole.
Senior Ally Siewert's Sunday 77 was the low round of the day for the Scots and marked her sixth in the 70s this fall. She finished in a tie for 18th-place at 163. Siewert's Sunday started with seven pars on the front nine, including five straight spanning holes two through six. On the back nine, Siewert played five holes at par or better, with a birdie falling on No. 17. Siewert had eight pars in Monday's round.
Sophomore Morgan Erdmann tied for 43rd-place at 182 and had a 10-stroke bounce back on Monday, thanks to a strong front nine. Erdmann had five pars on the front nine for a 4-over-par 41. Two of those pars came on par-3 holes, which she played at 2-over-par on the day. Erdmann was one of two Scots to birdie No. 17 in Sunday's round.
Sophomore Lizzy Hohman rounded out Wooster's lineup, tying for 53rd-place at 199. Hohman sank an early birdie on No. 2 on Sunday and capped the round with a par on the challenging 18th hole, which features a sizable false front on the Donald Ross-designed course.
Centre College dominated the eight-team field with a 604, which ranked 11 strokes ahead of second-place Denison University. Wittenberg University was third at 654. Centre's Anika Rana was the medalist with a 2-over-par 146.
