Women's Golf Tunes Up For Spring Season in North Carolina
Scots take on course that hosted 1974 PGA Championship
The College of Wooster women's golf team's spring season kicked off on Monday, and prior to it, the Fighting Scots tuned up at courses in the Greensboro, North Carolina area.
Chapel Ridge Golf Club was the team's first stop. Fred Couples, winner of the 1992 Masters, and a 15-time PGA Tour winner, teamed up with Bob Moore to turn the rolling hills land into a championship course reminiscent of the old traditional courses found in the United States.
Next, Wooster played Tanglewood Park's historic Championship Course, which hosted the 1974 PGA Championship, where Lee Trevino edged Jack Nicklaus by a single stroke to capture the Wanamaker Trophy. Tanglewood Park was also the site of the 1986 U.S. Amateur Public Links Championship and hosted the Vantage Championship on the Champions Tour from 1987 until 2002.
Robert Trent Jones Sr. originally designed the course, which is consistently ranked as one of the top public courses in the nation. Each picturesque hole is built on gentle rolling hills and the holes are often heavily guarded by many of the course's 98 bunkers.
Wooster's second-to-last tune-up round took place at Warrior Golf Club, where the Fighting Scots were able to get locked in for large putting surfaces, multi-tiered greens and numerous water hazards. Warrior, which has a five-star rating from Golf Digest, is built around a watershed.
Lastly, Wooster had a practice round at Tillery Tradition Country Club, where Monday and Tuesday's tournament is taking place. Nestled in the Uwharrie Mountains and bordered by breathtaking views of Lake Tillery, the course opened in 2000 and was designed by Carl Holston.
