Wooster Overwhelms Oberlin 18-1, Improves to 5-0 in NCAC

WOOSTER, Ohio – The College of Wooster women's lacrosse team pounced on OberlinOberlin College early, building a 10-0 cushion during the initial 20 minutes, and then cruised along to an 18-1 triumph, winning its ninth-consecutive game and maintaining its lead in the North Coast Athletic Conference standings on Senior Day at Carl Dale Field.

Fittingly, it was the Scots' (10-2, 5-0 NCAC) seniors that blitzed the Yeowomen (3-10, 0-5 NCAC) to open the game, as Jess Cleveland, Becca Worthington, and Amy Denny each scored to give Wooster a 3-0 lead just 3:32 into the action. The Scots continued their assault, and Jaqueline Wallat added her second goal with 9:27 remaining in the opening stanza that wrapped up Wooster's 10-0 scoring run.

Oberlin's Molly Bloom eventually ended its scoring draught with a successful free-position shot, but a Denny goal, and a Madison Carey score with 0:02 seconds on the clock gave Wooster a decisive 12-1 advantage heading into the break.

Goalkeeper Shawna Ferris helped Wooster hold Oberlin scoreless in the second half, as she made several saves and didn't allow a free-position shot (0-for-5) to get by her. Sophomore Jaqueline Wallat notched her first-career hat trick late in the period, and defender Isabel Baylor scored a rare goal on an Eliza Cady assist that ended the scoring onslaught.

Wooster outshot Oberlin 41-14 and more than doubled its groundballs (27-12). Yeowomen keeper Madeline O'Meara made 14 saves in the setback, while Ferris recorded eight saves and two groundballs.

Nina Dine paced Wooster's scoring leaders with two goals and three assists, with Wallat (3 goals) and Denny (2 goals, 1 assist) notching productive outings as well. Megan Piemonte and Cady each scored goals, with the latter also recording her first-career assist.

The Scots will wrap up their regular season this Saturday when they visit KenyonKenyon College (12-1, 4-1 NCAC) at 1 p.m, with home-field advantage in the NCAC Tournament at stake.
