Scots Struggle to Slow Down Fredonia State in 17-9 Setback

WOOSTER, Ohio – Trailing 0-3 in the opening minutes, The College of Wooster women's lacrosse team scored three-consecutive goals to tie the game, and then kept the contest close in the early goings, but Fredonia State University went on an impressive scoring run in the second half to overwhelm the Scots 17-9 on Saturday on the Sprinturf at John P. Papp Stadium.

The Blue Devils (3-2) blitzed the Scots (1-2) with three quick goals to start the game, but Wooster answered back when Nina Dine scored on a free-position shot just 5:50 into the action. Dine then picked up an early hat trick, scoring on an Emily Meyer's assist and an unassisted shot, tying the game 3-3 with 19:49 remaining in the opening stanza.

Fredonia State scored another set of unanswered goals over the next five minutes to take a 6-3 lead, but Katie Smart found Clare Nelson-Johnson for a Wooster score that cut the deficit to two. The Blue Devils added one more goal shortly after to give it a 7-4 advantage, and neither team scored again over the remaining 13 minutes before the break.

The second half was all Fredonia State, as they went on a 10-3 scoring run that included goals from nine different players. The Scots added two free-position goals from Amy Denny and Nelson-Johnson towards the end of the game, but the lead was too large at that point to mount a comeback bid.

Dine paced the Scot scorers with four goals, while Nelson-Johnson added two goals and an assist. The Blue Devils were led by an aggressive six-goal outing from Amy Simon.

Wooster goalkeeper's Shawna Ferris and Sarah Blosser split time in goal attempting to slow down Fredonia State's potent offense and combined to make seven saves, while their counterpart, Casey Chiesa, made 12 saves in recording the win.

The Scots will be back in action next Saturday when they host St. Vincent College (0-1) on Carl Dale Field at 1:30 p.m.
