Scots Bombard St. Vincent Early in 20-4 Thrashing

WOOSTER, Ohio – The College of Wooster women's lacrosse team orchestrated a goal-scoring onslaught Saturday, as it opened the game with eight unanswered goals and continued to get to the net time and time again, culminating in a 20-4 drubbing of St. Vincent College at Carl Dale Field.

Nina Dine and Becca Worthington both scored less than a minute into the action, and goals by Amy Denny and Madison Carey put the Scots (2-2) up 4-0 moments later. Worthington, Dine, and Clare Nelson-Johnson all tallied goals to push Wooster's lead to 7-0, and then Worthington picked up a hat trick with a third goal that made it 8-0 with 17:59 remaining in the first half.

The Bearcats (0-3) ultimately got on the scoreboard when Megan Kelly connected on a Megan Fisher assist, but the Scots quickly went back to work. Wooster got a rare goal from defender Britta Harman, and a Madison Carey score with 12 seconds on the clock pushed the cushion to 13-1 at the break.

The Scots took a more conservative approach in the second half, but still scored six goals, including a pair of scores from Carey and Katie Smart. Eliza Cady found the back of the net, the first goal of her career, on a free-position shot with 17 seconds remaining on the clock.

St. Vincent only attempted seven shots in the game compared to Wooster's 31. Goalkeeper Shawna Ferris made one save and allowed just two goals in her time protecting the net. Her counterpart, Jennifer Forsyth, managed 10 saves during the Scots' offensive bombardment.

Leading Wooster in scoring was Worthington, who posted the first five-goal outing of her career, and Madison Carey, who chipped in four goals and an assist. Smart was next in line with four points (2 goals, 2 assists), which is the highest single-game scoring output of her career.

The Scots will look to ride this momentum into Meadville, Pa. on Thursday, when they kick-off their North Coast Athletic Conference schedule against Allegheny College (2-3, 1-0 NCAC) at 7 p.m.
