Eight-Goal Run Ignites Wooster’s 18-10 Win Over Carthage

The College of Wooster women's lacrosse team traded scores with Carthage College in the early goings, but an eight-goal run that spanned 30 minutes during the middle of the game put the Scots in command for good, as they rolled to an 18-10 win on Saturday afternoon at Kenosha, Wis.

The Scots (6-2) took a 2-1 lead when Nina Dine delivered her second goal in the first five minutes of action, but the Lady Reds (2-9) answered back to knot the game 2-2. Clare Nelson-Johnson put Wooster back on top with a score, and then Madison Carey and Becca Worthington combined to score three goals over a remarkable 33 second span that gave it a 6-2 cushion.

Following two Carthage scores that brought it within 6-4, Wooster put together an explosive eight-goal run that put the game away. Nelson-Johnson and Worthington gave the Scots an 8-4 advantage at the break, and then Dine, Carey, Worthington, Emily Meyer, and Nelson-Johnson combined to score another six goals to open the second stanza that made it 14-4 Wooster.

Amy Denny recorded seven draw controls in the game, helping lead Wooster to a 21-7 advantage in the category. The Scots outshot the Lady Reds 27-16, and almost tripled their groundballs (11-4).

Dine, Worthington, and Nelson-Johnson all were atop the leader board with four goal outings, while Carey added two scores and Katie Smart chipped in a goal and an assist. Goalkeeper Shawna Ferris made three saves and allowed seven goals while playing for the majority of the win.

Wooster will face another non-conference foe tomorrow afternoon when it visits Trine University (3-6) at 2 p.m.
